Midweek XI: Belhus Rampant at Eastwood

Belhus 182 all out
Eastwood 80 all out

In this annual last game of Eastwoods cricket week, Belhus skipper Waters won the toss and decided to bat on a dampish track. In the unusual position of opening bat Ian Wright scored 66 and was supported by young Danny Joyce with 23, Jim Banner 27, Peter Clark 17 and Mike Randall 20 not out to set a reasonable target on a variable wicket. Dale Kenyon with 2 for 24 and Danny Chandler 2 for 28 soon had Eastwood reeling at 47 for 4. The 'older brigade' of Rich Waters 2 for 2 and Banner 3 for 3 soon wrapped up the innings, with Mike Cansdale 1 for 19, Eastwood were 80 all out and a fine 102 run win for Belhus!

Midweek XI: Read hits 94, Norris 64 and Terry Squires hits maiden 50 from only 38 deliveries

Belhus 279 for 4
Goresbrook 183 all out

In this perennial 40 over friendly Belhus skipper Richard Waters won the toss and elected to bat. It seemed possibly the wrong decision as after 10 overs Belhus had only 13 runs on the board with Jim Banner already back in the pavilion! However Wayne Read and young Danny Norris decided to push things on with a fine partnership of 143,Read scoring 94 off of 85 balls and Norris 63 off 58 balls. This set the platform for the "bowlers" Billy Winter with 22 runs and Terry Squires with 52 not out off only 38 balls, seeing Belhus to a very ample score! In reply Goresbrook started well with Andy Livett scoring 36 and Lawrence Walsh 30,but once these openers had been removed by Ian Wright 2 for 45 and Barry Ruck 3 for 31,only Friend with 31 and Calverly with 43 really troubled the scorers.Jim Banner 2 for 19 and Billy Winter 2 for 25 removed the resistance and Belhus won comfortably by 96 runs.

Veterans XI: Mighty Mathew Blasts Belhus to Final

Belhus Veterans 162-6
Horndon on the Hill Veterans 135-5

An incredible whirlwind innings of 48 in just 19 deliveries from Mathew Lewis of Belhus proved to be a decisive factor in this Thurrock veterans' knock-out cup semi-final at North Stifford on Wednesday evening. Lewis struck four fours and four sixes and there were only three deliveries from which he did not score. Mathew systematically savaged the first change bowling of Horndon's Peter Clark. Lewis took 42 runs off Clark as the bowler completed his spell showing figures he may find painful: 0-54 from just three overs. Earlier, Belhus openers John Forrest, 38 from 33 balls and Darren Frampton, 29 from 21 balls, laid the foundations for the Lewis charge by putting on 63 for the first wicket. Osborne removed both openers to finish with 2-41 from four overs, though runs continued to flow towards the end of the innings from Chris Dreher, 10, Brian Edwards 16 and Peter Clark (Belhus) 13. Amidst the run-fest on another excellent Belhus pitch, Joyce deserved great credit for his return of 3-19 from four overs.

After the break, Horndon started comfortably enough, but after 3.2 overs with the score on 26, Hornson suffered a blow when David Stitson was caught by Richard Waters off the bowling of Darren Wells for 19. Other opener Piggott struck 29 until he was next out, caught by Clark off Lewis for 29 with the score on 61. There were contributions later in the innings from I. Joyce, 19, West, 12, while Phil Foley and R. Joyce put on 45 in an unbroken stand for the sixth wicket. Foley finished on 27 and R. Joyce 19 but these two fell 28 runs short of their victory target. For Belhus, Lewis rounded off a fine evening's work with 2-23 from four overs while Wells and Michael Squires ended with 1-36 and 1-40 respectively. Umpires: Mr J Medlycott and Mr M Burnley (Essex Cricket Officials Association).

Belhus are now through to the final which will be played on their own North Stifford ground, where they will meet Pegasus and Corringham veterans on Tuesday 8th July, 6pm start.

Veterans XI: Rampant Frampton and Edwards earn semi-final place with Horndon

Stanford le Hope Veterans 123-3
Belhus Veterans 127-6

Belhus edged home in this thrilling match at North Stifford on Wednesday evening. Alan Maidment conceded just sixteen runs from his allotted four over spell to keep the reins on the visitors, but then Geoff Lake joined Robert Pean at the wicket and these two added 61 in an unbroken fourth wicket stand. Pean finished with 44 from 51 deliveries and Lake performed a 22-run cameo from 21 deliveries. Both batsmen struck four boundaries as Stanford closed on 123 from their sixteen eight-ball overs in this Thurrock veteran's cup match. Earlier, Bill Poskett senior hit 29. For Belhus Richard Waters took 2-22 while Ian Wright took 1-31, both completing their maximum allotment of four overs each. Darren Frampton top scored with the home side with 31, in a 27-ball innings which included two consecutive sixes off Bill Poskett junior, but the very next ball saw Frampton on his way back to the pavilion, with Poskett junior having the final say and picking up his second wicket in the process. There were other useful contributions from John Forrest, 14, Mike Randall 17, and Stephen Huckstepp, 10.

With two overs remaining, Belhus required 12 runs to win with five wickets in hand. Eight runs and one wicket accrued from the penultimate over, bowled by Jon Fuller. The victim was home skipper Barry Ruck. In the final over from Peter Victory, Waters pushed the second ball for two runs, the fourth ball was a leg-bye which brought the scores level and with Brian Edwards back on strike, he promptly dispatched the next delivery to the boundary rope to send Belhus through to the next round. For the visitors, Fuller finished with 2-23 from four overs, Poskett junior 2-38 from four while Victory finished with 1-25 from 3.5 overs. Umpires: Jim Medlycott and Keith Wood (Essex Association of Cricket Officials).

First, Patel was caught by Richard Waters from second ball of the innings, then number three batsman Keith Abbott took a single to bring remaining opener Neil Cook on strike. He survived the first ball, only to have his woodwork re-arranged by the lively pace of Kenyon, who finished with 3-36 from eight overs. Friendly vs Eastwood - 11/08/06

Eastwood 180 for 9 (35 overs)
Belhus 181 for 6 (33.4 overs)

Belhus made it a miserable cricket week for Eastwood by making it a clean sweep of defeats for the home side. Eastwood batting first had reached 150 for 3 when Joe Cunningham was dismissed for 24 in the 26th over, and looked set for a score in excess of 210. However some tight offspin bowling from Michael Cansdale 3 for 10 and Mark Winter 3 for 26 cut Eastwood back and excellent ground fielding including a run out from the boundary by Peter Clark tied Eastwood down to a more manageable 180 for 9. In response Belhus socked it to the Eastwood bowlers with guest and former player Wayne Read hit 75 and Paul Huckstepp an entertaining 61. In a final flurry of wickets it took a steady knock from Peter Clark 13* to see Belhus home, Sutherby picked up 3 for 31 for the visitors.

Friendly vs South Walsham - 10/08/06

Belhus 204 for 6
South Walsham 205 for 9

Belhus entertained Norfolk tourists South Walsham on Thursday at North Stifford. In a time game batting first Belhus totalled 204 for 6, with Tony Lincoln smashing 87 and Richard Dopson making 43. The visitors best bowler was Paul Woods with 3 for 40. The tourists were in trouble early on and at 84 for 6 Belhus were in full control. A partnership of 96 between Woods 54 and Yallop 46 for the 7th wicket pulled Walsham back into it and in a frenzied final few overs they managed to squeeze home in the last over by one wicket.

League Cup vs Noak Hill 29/05/06

Belhus 2nd XI 69/8 18 overs
Match abandoned
Belhus beat Noak Hill 2-0 after bowl out

Belhus went through to the semi final of the League Cup after claiming a tense bowl out win away at Noak Hill.

After reluctantly choosing to play a reduced 18 overs a side game in the swamp like conditions, Belhus struggled to 69/8 with Chris Didd top scoring with 14.

But during the tea interval, the heavens opened yet again and it was decided that a bowl out was the only way a result could be achieved.

With 7 players having one attempt at one stump, luck played a very important role and after 5 attempts from each team, the score was still 0-0.

Then up stepped Roy Heffernan who converted his chance giving Belhus the lead and putting the pressure firmly on the home side.

And with Noak Hill missing their 6th attempt, it was up to Tom Thompson to seal the win with the single stump flying out of the ground to the delight of Belhus and their travelling supporters.
