Sat 1sts: Tom Thompson hits 76 as Wilkinson nearly puts Belhus to the sword

Goresbrook 1st 145-4
Belhus 1st 147-4

A superb innnings of 76 from 86 deliveries by Tom Thompson sealed the visitors fate in this 30-overs per side game at North Stifford on Saturday. Thompson hit nine fours and initially shared a 38-run opening partnership with Peter Clark, who struck three boundaries in a 27-ball innings, scoring 16 in the process. Also dismissed for 16 was number three batsman Darren Frampton. Owen Jefferies then chipped in with a stylish 14 not out, leaving Jim Robertson to hit the winning runs as he finished not out with three runs.

Earlier, Chapman top scored for Goresbrook with 45 until he needlessly ran himself out, misjudging a chase and retrieve from Roy Heffernan at backward square leg. Chapman received good support from Wilkinson with 24 and P. Friend was undefeated on 32 at tea. On the excellent Belhus track wickets were always going to be at a premium, though Michael Fogg continued his foray into the medium-pacer's club with 1-15 from six overs (two maidens), Heffernan yielding 1-14 from six overs and Michael Squires being rewarded with 1-12 from three. The Goresbrook attack was led by Hickey, 2-12 from five overs, while M. Friend and O'Sullivan took a wicket apiece as the rain began to fall, symbolic, perhaps, of a final curtain to the 2008 cricket season.

Sat 1sts: Edwards 46 and Owen Jefferies 4-31 star at Northfleet

Northfleet 147 all out
Belhus 1st XI 127 all out

Thirteen year-old leg spinner Owen Jefferies bagged a magnificent 4-31 from eight overs while Brian Edwards struck a fine 46, but Belhus were not able to prise victory from the grasp of a keen Northfleet side at Wombwell Park on Saturday. Ian Wright grabbed 3-20 from eight overs (two maidens), while Tony Ellis and Edwards picked up 1-21 and 1-22 respectively. Northfleet opener Potter traded solely in boundaries as he struck five fours and one six in a quick-fire innings of 26, until he tried his arm once too often, being caught from a top edge by Ryan Prendergast at square leg off the bowling of Tony Ellis, operating from the pavilion end. The next four batsmen also made double figures, being Williams with 18, Phillips 17, King with 15 and Morris, who top scored for the home side with 40.

After tea, Belhus faltered after the loss of Michael Cansdale for just 20, though Brian Edwards was in good nick, but just four runs short of what would have been a deserved half-century, he pushed at one outside off stump which took the inside edge onto his wicket. This proved to be a decisive blow as only two further batsmen made double figures, being Danny Norris with 16 and Cliff Cansdale who dropped anchor with 21. While Belhus were left to rue their apparent lack of crease occupancy which contributed to their downfall in chasing a fairly modest total on a good track with a short boundary, D. King finished with 3-36 for the home side and he received good support from Harfield, 2-15 from four overs (one maiden), 2-28 was recorded by Morris and 1-21 from six overs was the summary from opening bowler Williams.

Sat 1sts: Fogg makes four batsmen disappear

Belhus 1st 164 all out
Goresbrook 1st 168-8

Michael Fogg relinquished the wicketkeeping gloves for this friendly encounter at North Stifford on Saturday and in doing so took the first four wickets to fall in a devastating spell of seam bowling to leave the visitors at 47-4 after nine overs. Fogg struck twice in his third over when he had Friend caught behind by East for just two runs and then bowled Rooke for a duck. With the final ball of his next over he sent Irving back to the pavilion, courtesy of a Cliff Cansdale catch at backward point. Fogg's fifth over was a wicket maiden, accounting for Goresbrook's number five batsman Kulasena, clean bowled for five runs. With Fogg finishing his spell, limited to seven overs in this 35-over per side match, Goresbrook were able to mount a recovery as Fogg finished with 4-25 which included one maiden. It was Maund who eventually clawed the visitors out of the mire with a fine undefeated 47 to secure victory with just two wickets and 2.2 overs remaining. Earlier, Andy Livett struck a fine 56 for Goresbrook until he became the second of Cliff Cansdale's victims (2-31 off seven overs). Brian Edwards and Danny Norris took 1-9 and 1-10 respectively.

Before tea, Belhus had stuttered with the bat as three batsmen failed to trouble the scorers, though Fogg laid the foundations for his magnificent all-round performance with 27, Michael Cansdale hit 35, Owen Jefferies scored 20, while Michael Squires and Ricki Ellis recorded 19 and 18 respectively. It could be argued though, on a perfect pitch and first class outfield, Belhus should have emerged with more runs from the batsman-friendly conditions. For Goresbrook, Walsh took 2-31 from seven overs, while K. Friend took 2-11 from five overs (one maiden). Bird, Martin, Livett, Kulasena and M. Friend took one wicket each.

Sat 1sts: Kenyon hits unbeaten 35, takes a wicket, a catch and two-run outs

Canvey Island 1st 166-6
Belhus 1st 144 all out

Islanders R. Casson and J. Wall put on 93 for the first wicket at Small Gains Park, Canvey Island to put Belhus firmly on the back foot on Saturday. Casson struck five boundaries in a fine knock of 58 from 68 deliveries in 80 minutes while fellow opener Wall hit 34, though hitting only one four in the process from 49 deliveries faced. Both openers ran well between the wickets putting continual pressure on the Belhus in-field. However, the adventurous running led to the collapse of J. Wall, he was run out by Dale Kenyon at point after his throw was safely pouched by Michael Cansdale at the bowler's end and the wicket promptly broken. Seven runs later, Kenyon took a good low catch at backward-square leg to dismiss Casson off Michael Cansdale (2-27 off eight overs). With six further runs added to the score, J. Casson was bowled by Michael Cansdale for a duck. P. Wall was then dismissed in identical fashion to his namesake for nine runs as Belhus induced a mini-collapse from 93 for no wicket to 106-4. Further loss ensued as Burrell was bowled by Connor Day in an excellent second spell, Day finishing with 1-29 from eight overs. With Kenyon (1-31, eight overs) bowling Gunn for 25, Lee and Robinson finishing on 15 not out and 5 not out respectively, the home side ended their 40-over innings on 166-5.

After the break, the Belhus batting was below standard. Gavin Jefferies was run out for just one run and fellow opener chased a wide delivery and was caught for seven runs. Stuart Morris was trapped leg before for ten runs, Scott Bayford bowled for five; Michael Cansdale dismissed for just seven runs. By this stage, Belhus were 57-6 and looking at the prospect of a heavy defeat unless the middle-order could produce something special. Michael Fogg went for 17, Ricki Ellis, Day and Don East contributed ten runs between them as Belhus fell to 117-9. Kenyon made a brave attempt to salvage some respectability to the score with a fine undefeated 35 and he found an ally in last man Cliff Cansdale, who made 19 until he was caught at short mid-wicket. In the end, Belhus fell just 22 runs short but no-one could deny Canvey their deserved victory, for whom Burrell finished with 3-32 (five overs and one maiden), Robinson 2-12 from eight overs, four of which were maidens, while Diamond, Lee, and M. Casson took one wicket apiece.

Martin Rooke inflicted substantial damage with a fine 5-16 from 5.5 overs, including one maiden, while Ochwi picked up 2-14 from seven overs (three maidens) and S Smith 2-28 from five overs.

Kale struck 62 for Grays and Chadwell in an innings which included six fours and two sixes from 79 balls faced, while colleague O'Neill hit 61 in a knock which included nine boundaries from 63 deliveries. Belhus had six batsmen in double figures, being Gavin Jefferies 37, Stuart Morris 14, Michael Fogg 35, Mathew Lewis 28, Roy Heffernan 18 and Ben Marns 31. Belhus can take significant credit from this encouraging performance, bearing in mind that no fewer than six regular players were missing, having opted to join the large Belhus contingent who were supporting Essex in their Friends Provident cup final triumph at Lord's.

Sat 1sts: Bakers cooked by 92 from Jefferies and 55 by Fogg

Belhus 1st 286-7
May and Baker 1st 225 all out

Belhus U17 juniors Gavin Jefferies and Michael Fogg put on a match-winning partnership of 87 for the third Belhus wicket at North Stifford on Saturday. Jefferies recorded his highest score in senior cricket with a fine 92, while Michael Fogg scored the first of two half-centuries for the weekend with 55. Jefferies hit ten boundaries from 107 balls faced in an innings lasting two hours and five minutes, Fogg faced 46 balls in a 55 minute stay at the crease hitting five fours and one six in the process. If the partnership of Jefferies and Fogg was decisive, the opening partnership between Jefferies and Nick Marns certainly laid the foundations for another excellent batting performance. Marns struck 46 until he was bowled by Aziz to become the first wicket to fall with the score on 91. Steve Huckstepp contributed 20, plenty of wickets in hand inside the remaining eight overs set the stage for some cameo performances. Richard Waters hit 11 from only ten deliveries, Michael Cansdale scored 10 runs from only six deliveries with the left-hand whirlwind Ryan Lucas winding up to hit eleven runs from only four balls faced. Despite the batting carnage of the home team, May and Baker emerged with some credit on the bowling front as Afzal finished with 2-59 from nine overs, including the wicket of Jefferies, while Aziz ended with 2-46 from seven overs which included one maiden.

After tea, May and Baker's opening pair raced to 57 without loss after the first ten overs in this Lord's International Essex league premier division fixture, but then spin bowler Cansdale struck by taking a wicket in each of his first three overs to peg the visitors back to 78 for three. The second change bowler, with his very first ball, had opener Khusro bowled for 14 runs, then fifth ball of his second over saw the remaining opener, Palmera, trudging back to the pavilion, also bowled. Then number four batsman Shaukat was trapped leg before after a strong appeal answered in the affirmative by umpire Trevor Forrest. However, the batting side then rallied through Semar with 23 and Aziz with a fine 52 from 63 balls faced, hitting three fours and three sixes for good measure. These two boosted the score to 136-4 with 20 overs remaining. Semar was bowled by Mark Winter for 23 to become the first of three Winter victims, while dangerman Aziz was caught by wicketkeeper Fogg to become Cansdale's fourth victim. With Azlam being trapped leg before by Dale Kenyon for 14, Umar contributing 13 until caught by Lucas to give Cansdale his fifth and final wicket of the match. Tariq Aslam was victim to a real father and son act - caught by Billy Winter off dad Mark for two; shortly afterwards the innings was wrapped up when Winter senior had Mirza trapped leg before for eight runs as May and Baker were dismissed for 225 with 4.2 overs remaining. Cansdale finished with 5-38 from nine overs, while Winter ended with 3-30 from 8.4 overs which included one maiden. Dale Kenyon and Richard Waters returned 1-37 and 1-38 respectively.

Steve Huckstepp top scored with 28, while Ryan Lucas hit a breezy 27 from only 35 balls faced, hitting two fours and one six in the process. Another thriller at North Stifford

Belhus Sat 1st X1 192 all out
Goresbrook 193 for 8
In a superb game of friendly cricket at North Stifford,Belhus won the toss and elected to bat.It seemed a good decision when Belhus were on 115 with no loss, openers Richard Day 55 (8 fours) and Michael Fogg 50 (6 fours)providing a great start. However there followed a terrible collapse, and only skipper Martin Guilbert coming in at the surprisingly low position of number 8 and scoring 35 not out, managed to bother the scorer. For Goresbrook Israel Ochwo with 2 for 31, Lee Wilkinson 4 for 29 and Lawrence Walsh 2 for 16 were the main destroyers. After tea goresbrook seemed to be sailing along towards the target, until the introduction of the "spin twins" Michael Cansdale and Brian Edwards who pegged the batsmen back a bit. Some good run-outs and catching saw Goresbrook battle to finally win in the penultimate over.Ian Wright with 2 for 30 and Guilbert,Robertson,Waters(rob) and Edwards a wicket each were the wicket takers.A flawless 57 from Andy Livett , 48 from Toby Maund and 36 from Lawrence Walsh, and a late cameo from Dave Whisker saw Goresbrook home with 7 balls to go.

Baker boys beaten by Belhus

Belhus 1st X1 191/7
May & Baker 1st X1 175 all out

Belhus bounced back from last weeks defeat to beat May & Baker by 16 runs.

After being on the wrong side of a close encounter last week, Belhus posted a total of 191/7 in their 45 overs. Skipper Martin Guilbert hit a fine 48 but it was the undefeated partnership of Roy Heffernan and Michael Cansdale that brought Belhus up to their total. They made 68 not out and 44 not out respectively. Hammad Barber produced a fine opening spell of bowling – returning figures of 4/23 off 9 overs.

May & Maker looked to be cruising as number 3 batsman Asif Iqbal smashed 77 and supported by the upper order. But after he was dismissed by Heffernan, Rich Waters tore the middle and lower order apart by claiming a five wicket haul for just 27 runs. Heffernan finished with figures of 2/26.

Guilbert Strikes 66 but Belhus fail by eleven runs

Leyton County 1st XI 142 all out
Belhus 1st XI 131 all out

Belhus skipper Martin Guilbert struck a magnificent 66 for his team but appeared to be badly let down by his team-mates as only two of his colleagues was able to reach double figures in this Lord's International premier division clash at North Stifford on Saturday (26th May 2007). Richard Waters scored 15 and Colin Adams 16. That was the sum total of any home resistance as Belhus crumbled to an eleven-run defeat. The man to do the damage with the ball was Rajnish Dohal, who claimed 4-27 from 6.5 overs, including the vital wicket of Guilbert.

Before tea, it had looked so promising for Belhus as Leyton County succumbed to 142 all out. Lead wicket-takers were Michael Cansdale and Richard Waters. Cansdale finished with 2-11 from 3.2 overs, including one maiden, while Waters claimed 2-28 from nine overs, including two maidens. Three Belhus bowlers took one wicket, being Tony Gaylard 1-27, while Christopher Didd and Robert Waters both finished on 1-24, with Waters proving to be a very mean bowler as his spell was for the maximum allowed under league rules - nine overs - and he managed to complete three maidens. Top scorer for Leyton County was Dohal, starting what was to turn out to be a fine all-round winning performance with 39, while Maxwell Creese and Mubasher Safdar both scored 20 and Surjeet Ubhi gave some support with 16.

Mahmood swings it for Asians despite 38 not out from Tony Gaylard

Asians 1st XI 168 all out
Belhus 1st XI 161-9

Belhus fell just seven runs short of victory in this latest Lord's International Essex league premier division clash at North Stifford on Saturday (19th May 2007). Belhus captain Martin Guilbert won the toss and invited Asians to bat first. Opening batsman Anwar made the most of the usual top standard facility at North Stifford with a well crafted 69, until he was caught by Richard Day off the bowling of Richard Waters. Asian number four batsman Mahmood also went past the half-century mark, reaching 51 before being caught. However, these two batsmen were the only real contributors to the visitors' batting. Tony Gaylard took 2-32, Robert Waters 2-29 and Richard Waters 2-43. In good support were teenagers Dale Kenyon and Michael Cansdale, with one wicket apiece.

After the break, an ineffective middle order 'display' - if it can be called that - saw batsmen at numbers three to seven inclusive muster only twelve runs between them. Thankfully opening batsmen Guilbert and Chris Didd scored 34 and 27 respectively. It was then left to the late order to get the Belhus engine started again through Cansdale with 14, Robert Waters 13, but most significantly there was a tremendous effort from Gaylard with an undefeated 38 who almost saw Belhus through to a victory in a thrilling run-chase.

The main to wreak havoc amongst the Belhus batsmen was Mahmood. Adding to his fine half century earlier in the day, Mahmood took the wickets of both Belhus openers, then added the middle-order scalps of Richard Day and Colin Adams for good measure, to finish with 4-19 from nine overs, which included two maidens. Iqbal took 3-26 while Kalid took 1-43.

Team Effort Secures 1st XI League win over Chadwell Heath

Chadwell Heath 1st XI 129 all out
Belhus 1st XI 130-7

Belhus secured their second Lord's International league premier division victory in three outings so far this season at North Stifford on Saturday (12th May 2007). Chadwell Heath were dismissed after 41.1 overs. Sixteen year old Dale Kenyon, took his first wickets at this level, claiming 2-18 from an opening spell of six overs. He had opening batsman Daniel Finch trapped leg before for nine runs, then had number four batsman Chay Hedges bowled for a duck. Change bowlers Michael Cansdale, Richard Waters and Roy Heffernan ensured that the early pressure on the Chadwell Heath batsmen was maintained throughout. Cansdale bowled four maidens in a tidy nine-over spell which yielded 2-16, similarly, Waters returned 2-23 including three maidens and Heffernan mopped up the tail nicely with 2-13 from 3.1 overs.

After tea, Richard Day led the way with the bat for Belhus with a fine 38 until he was trapped leg before off the bowling of Alfie Hedges. Four other batsmen reached double figures. Wicketkeeper Colin Adams was promoted to opener and made 13, skipper Martin Guilbert struck 20, Chris Didd reached 12 and it was left to Richard Waters to secure the wining points with 11 not out. For Chadwell Heath, Alfie and Chay Hedges took two wickets apiece while one wicket each was claimed by Baldwin, Biggs and Butt.

Tricky 49 not out but Fords win with 16 balls to spare

Belhus 1st XI 166-9
Ford Sports 1st XI 167-7

Richard Waters struck a fine undefeated 49 for Belhus at North Stifford on Saturday (5th May 2007), but it was the visitors who were celebrating after overcoming the home team's total with sixteen balls to spare. Aside from Waters, there was just one other significant contribution of 30 from Michael Cansdale. There were just two other Belhus batsmen in double figures in an otherwise disappointing batting display, being Richard Day with 11 runs and Tony Gaylard with 15. For Fords, Ali Raja returned incredible figures of 3-10 from nine overs, this included four maidens. After the break, both Fords openers posted solid scores, Kamran Sheraz scoring 30 and Siraj Nasir making a fine 51. There were further contributions from Faraz Khan with 19, Hasnan Ali with 12, while Zahzir Mohammed and Aufur Javed saw Fords home as they both finished undefeated on 20 and 17 respectively.

For Belhus, Cansdale completed a fine all-round performance by claiming 3-33 from nine overs. Providing good support were Mark Winter 2-37, while Gaylard took 1-28 from six overs. Sixteen year old Dale Kenyon made his first eleven league debut and certainly impressed, the pace bowler returned 0-26 from seven overs, which included one maiden.

Belhus Back in Premier Division with 16-run win

Belhus 1st XI 210-6
Grays and Chadwell 1st XI 194 all out

Belhus started their campaign in the premier division of the Lord's International cricket league with a 16-run victory over local rivals Grays and Chadwell on a fine North Stifford surface on Saturday (28th April) 2007. After the early loss of captain Martin Guilbert, caught by Robert Neal off the bowling of Andrew Hills for just three runs, fellow opener Chris Didd reached a fine 54 until he was caught by Andrew Hills off the bowling of Imran Mohammed. Belhus number three batsman Richard Day also showed some fine early season with the bat for the home side with 64, until he too was caught by Andrew Hills, off the bowling of older brother Matthew. Roy Heffernan chiped in with 12, while Colin Adams sent the score rcing over the double hundred mark with a fine undefeated 45.

For Grays and Chadwell, Mohammed finished with 2-27 from nine overs, which included two madens. After tea, Grays opening batsman Rob Baker was in sparking form as he plundered a fine 88 until he was caught behind by Adams off the bowling of verteran paceman Robert Waters. Beyond Baker and John Kale with 23, the only other Grays batsman in double figures was Robert Neale with 48. But the dismissal of Baker by Waters was significant, Grays looked to be coasting to victory but a sensational spell from Waters put Grays on the slide, as the visitors finally succumbed to 194 all out. Waters finished with 4-47 from eight overs while Michal Cansdale returned 2-25 and there was a wicket apiece for Chris Didd and Tony Gaylard.

Belhus Win First Game of 2007 by 100 Runs

BELHUS 235-7
SIDCUP 135-9

As usual, Belhus staged the opening cricket fixture in Thurrock at their resplendent village setting at North Stifford and in doing set up a wining margin of exactly 100 runs over their visitors from Kent. Martin Guilbert and Chris Didd opened the batting and these two put on 47 for the first wicket until Didd was bowled for 19. Guilbert eventually became one of three victims of Hasan (3-47 from nine overs) as the Belhus captain was dismissed for a fine 40. There were further good contributions down the Belhus order as Roy Heffernan scored 19, Nathan Turner 28, Darren Frampton 22, but then Lee Webber turned up the heat on Sidcup with a fine undefeated 58 in an innings which included six fours and one maximum.

After the break, Belhus used nine bowlers as good practice for the league season to follow. Encouraging for Belhus was a promising eight-over spell from Tony Gaylard, who has not played for the club for at least a decade when a member of the junior section. Gaylard finished with an impressive 1-16 which included three maidens, while Dale Kenyon from the club's U16 Matchplay squad took 1-41 from two five-over spells, including one maiden. Spin bowler Michael Cansdale took 2-11 from five overs (one maiden) as well as taking two fine catches and a run out from a direct throw at the stumps. 30/09/06: Belhus salvage a draw with St Johns

St John's 200 all out
Belhus 80-7 (match drawn)

Belhus were able salvage a draw at North Stifford on Saturday in a game which ebbed and flowed as the home team lost their first six wickets for only nineteen runs. Earlier, Phil Cox and Roger Carpenter had put on 84 for the first wicket for St. John's in exactly an hour, when Carpenter was bowled by Cliff Cansdale for 25. With the score on nelson - 111 - Cox followed his opening partner back to the pavilion, caught by Michael Squires at backward point, also off the bowling of Cansdale for 66, an innings which included eleven boundaries. Other useful contributions from the visiting Billericay-based club came from Andy Brown 12, William Stephens 38, Matthew Howard 12, Geoff Cox 12, while Kevin Barrow was undefeated on 14 at the close. All of the wickets fell to spinners with Michael Squires the pick of the bunch with 4-37 from 9.4 overs, while in good support were Cliff Cansdale 3-50 from 11 overs (two maidens) and left-armer Brian Edwards 2-19 from five overs. As the St. John's innings approached its close, heavy rain fell and Belhus knew they were not going to have the best of the day's batting conditions. So it proved and, looking down the barrel of a big defeat, fifteen year old Michael Fogg showed maturity and some much-needed concentration and good technique by batting for one hour and 28 minutes to finish undefeated on 39 not out, while Cliff Cansdale was equally resolute with his straight bat for 65 minutes for an undefeated eleven runs. The frustrated visiting bowlers were Geoff Cox, 3-16 and Kevin Barrow 2-12, while Joe Cox and David Cripps took one wicket apiece.

v Goresbrook 23/09/06

Goresbrook 1st 216-4
Belhus 1st 195 all out

Goresbrook’s Andy Livett carried his bat for a magnificent 107 at North Stifford on Saturday. His innings consisted of 13 boundaries and faced 133 deliveries in his marathon two hours and 24 minutes at the crease. He put on 78 for the first wicket with fellow opener Joe Wilkinson, who made 31. Wilkinson was caught by an adept Peter Clark at short third man off the bowling of Robert Waters. Giving valuable support for the Goresbrook cause was Lawrence Walsh with 35 and Adam Ivey with 14. Despite a long absence from the Belhus team, Waters proved he had lost none of his bowling ability with 1-18 from 6 overs. Michael Cansdale showed his all-round ability with 2-11 from three overs of spin, a fine catch at cover and then, after tea, top scored in the Belhus innings with 49. Belhus had opened brightly with Richard Day, 31, and Michael Fogg, 10, putting on 44 for the second wicket. In fact the top eight home batsmen all made double figures, though none were able to press on and build a Livett-like match-winning innings. Brian Edwards contributed ten runs, Clark produced a dozen, Roy Heffernan’s dynamo yielded 27, skipper Richard Waters made 14 and Michael Campbell-Jones plundered 11 as the pressure built and the remaining deliveries diminished in this forty overs per side affair. For Goresbrook, veteran Dave Whisker took the bowling honours with 5-36 from eight overs, which included one maiden. Ramouff finished with 2-35, while there was a wicket apiece for Sharma, Singh and Messenger.

Thompson strikes 52 at the Valley

Belhus 1st 105 all out
Roding Valley 1st 108-3

Batting at number four, Tom Thompson struck a fine 52 for Belhus in an innings which included six boundaries from 70 deliveries but it was not enough to save his team from going down to seven wicket defeat on a difficult track at Roding Valley on Saturday. He was last man out and performed a one-man rescue bid as Belhus had only eleven runs on the board when they had lost five of their recognised batsmen. The men to do the damage for the home side were Horgan, 3-2 from four overs, including three maidens, while Hassain took 2-29 (six overs, 1 maiden), while Lander finished with 2-15 from 4.3 overs. For Roding Valley, Lander saw his team home with 32 not out, supported by Roberts with 18 and Curtis with 23. Thirteen year old Ockendon School pupil Billy Winter emerged with credit, finishing with 1-14 when he had Venus trapped leg before wicket.

Lords International League vs Leyton County - 19/08/06

Belhus 1st XI 233/2 (38 overs)
Leyton County 2nd XI 88 all out

Belhus 1st XI gained promotion back to the Premier Division of the Lords International League at the weekend after a thumping win at home to Leyton County.

All the great performances of the season came to fruition as another fine display secured second spot for Belhus with still one game to go.

With another batting paradise prepared over at North Stifford village green, Belhus made full use of it first up after making 233/2 in just 38 overs. Star of the show was Scott Bayford who hit his second century of the month by making an unbeaten 100. Martin Guilbert made an impressive 65 with Roy Heffernan finishing unbeaten with Bayford on 39.

In reply, Leyton County could only muster a mediocre 88 after another fine performance from the Belhus veteran attack.

James Robertson grabbed 3 wickets at the cost of just 30 runs while Mark Winter ended with figures of 2/25. Young spinner Michael Cansdale returned figures of 2/11.

Lords International League vs Asians 2nd XI - 05/08/06

Asians 2nd XI 131 all out
Belhus 1st XI 132/4

After defeats in their last two games, Belhus bounced back to form with an easy victory over Asians at the weekend.

Fielding first, Belhus restricted the home side to 131 with some fine bowling from two of Belhus’ most experienced and mature players. Mark Winter and Jim Robertson returned fantastic figures of 4/31 and 3/26 respectively with each bowling their allotted 9 overs. Youngster Michael Cansdale also bagged a brace and ended up with figures of 2/32.

The Belhus reply got off to a bad start – losing both openers for ducks – to put the pressure firmly on the visitors. It was left to Roy Heffernan and Martin Guilbert (37) to steady the ship for Belhus with Heffernan seeing Belhus through to the end by hitting a fine 65 not out. Colin Adams was there at the end with 14 not out.

Lords International League vs Barking 1st XI - 22/07/06

Barking 1st XI 316/7
Belhus 1st XI 308/8

Belhus succumbed to their first defeat of the season after an enthralling match which saw over 600 runs scored in just 90 overs of cricket!

Barking won the toss and decided to bat first on what was a batsman’s paradise and wasted no time in getting the board ticking along.

Barking compiled a massive 316 runs in their 45 overs with Belhus’ Chris Didd picking up 3 wickets for a cost of 64 runs.

Most teams would have given up at the half way stage having to chase an almost impossible target. But Belhus did completely the opposite and in the end, only fell short by 8 runs.

Australian Danny Hyndmann smashed a fabulous 125 – his second ton of the season. Martin Guilbert also struck a fine 41 and Colin Adams finished not out on the same score. But their efforts were not enough to see Belhus to a historic win which would have further enhanced their chances of promotion in what is becoming a very tight division at the top.

Lords International League vs Tennyson 1st XI - 15/07/06

Tennyson 1st XI 226 all out
Belhus 1st XI 229/6

Yet another win for Tricky’s troops was gained at the weekend with a hard earned 4 wicket victory over Tennyson.

Belhus, flying in the Lords International League, got off to a great start taking early wickets thanks to Chris Didd (3/45). But Tennyson made a good recovery and posted a handy score of 226 on what seemed to be a winning score on a difficult track. Danny Hyndmann also grabbed 3 wickets at the cost of 36 runs.

The Belhus chase then got off to the worst possible start – much in the same way as Tennyson – with 3 of the top 4 batsmen scoring 11 runs between them!

It was left to Richard Day (97 from 155 balls) and Nick Marns (61 from 59 balls) to steady the Belhus boat as the pair put on 113 for the fourth wicket. Belhus then lost both Day and Marns in quick succession and a mini middle order collapse was again steadied by Didd and skipper Richard Walters who saw Belhus home with 3 overs to spare.

Lords International League vs Hawks 2nd XI - 08/07/06

Hawks 2nd XI 198 all out
Belhus 1st XI 200/4

After a thrilling tour of Norwich during the week, Belhus were back in business in the Lords International League and gained a fine victory over Hawks to remain unbeaten for the season.

Hawks, batting first, fell just two short of the magic 200 mark. Chris Didd picked up two of the away teams wickets at the cost of 30 runs and Danny Hyndman contributed with a fine economical display of 1/19.

Belhus managed their target easily on the batsman friendly wicket and only lost four wickets on the way. Martin Guilbert top scored with 71 and the in-form Matt Vallis gained another half century scoring 60.

Belhus are still in pole position to gain promotion with skipper Rich Waters overwhelmed at another great display from his side.

Lords International League vs Fords 2nd XI - 01/07/06

Fords 2nd XI 212/7
Belhus 1st XI 214/2

The Belhus 1st string are virtually unstoppable this season after yet another resounding victory over Fords at North Stifford on Saturday.

An early start due to the football didn’t prevent there being plenty of runs on what was a batsmans paradise.

Fords were first up and posted a very handy 212/7 off their 45 overs. Mark Winter was the pick of the bowlers ending with figures of 2/29 and Paul Hall also grabbed a couple of the Fords scalps.

Belhus got their innings off to the worst possible start and were soon struggling on 9/2 and suddenly the total started to seem more then just handy! But a fantastic double century partnership between Danny Hyndman (107 not out) and Matt Vallis (63 not out) saw Belhus home comfortably with more then 5 overs to spare.

The win still leaves Belhus in a great position to gain promotion back to the Lords International Premier League with a close fight for top spot between them and Horchurch Athletic.

Lords International League vs Chadwell Heath 24/06/06

Chadwell Heath 2nd XI 144 all out
Belhus 1st XI 145/2

The half way stage has now come and Belhus are still undefeated in the Lords International League Division 1 as they soundly beat Chadwell Heath on Saturday.

Chadwell Heath could only manage a mediocre 144 after another strong Belhus bowling performance meant they commanded the game from the start. Three wickets apiece for Nathan Honeyman and Chris Didd meant that Chadwell Heath were never going to set a challenging target for the visitors.

Belhus then wasted no time hitting off the runs and managed it with the fall of just two wickets. Matt Vallis continued his excellent form hitting 58 not out and he was there at the end with David Gibson who finished with 31 not out. Richard Day also made a valuable contribution of 29 to help Belhus to another victory.

Lords International League vs Leyton County 17/06/06

Leyton County 2nd XI 187/8
Belhus 1st XI 191/4

Belhus 1st XI are romping away in the Lords International League Division 1 after another emphatic victory againt Leyton County.

The home side, batting first, made 187/8 off their 45 overs with four of the Belhus bowlers picking up two wickets each. Michael Cansdale was the most economical of the four with figures of 2/23 and fellow spinner Mark Winter finished with 2/28. Danny Hyndmann and skipper Richard Waters returned figures of 2/33 and 2/28 respectively.

Belhus then had no trouble chasing down the total and knocked off the runs with 14 overs to spare. Ben Marns was the star with the bat finishing on 64 not out with Waters at the crease at the end with 22 not out. Hyndmann and Chris Didd made 50 and 22 respectively to help Belhus continue their good form.

Waters was pleased with the display adding, “We have a good group of young cricketers coming through the ranks with some of them producing the goods today. Its been a great start to the season and lets hope we can continue it right through to the end.”

Lords International League: Goresbrook 10.06.06

BELHUS 1st XI 194-7
GORESBROOK 1st XI 191-8

Belhus held on to their undefeated record in division one of the Lord's
International Essex County League at North Stifford on Saturday - but it was
a very close thing as the visiting Goresbrook batsmen fell just four runs
short of their target in a thrilling encounter. With a start time of 9am so
that both teams and supporters could follow events of national importance in
Germany, the early alarm clock settings did not seem to affect Martin
Guilbert, Danny Hyndman, and Chris Didd at all. Guilbert weighed in with a
fine 65 until he was dismissed by a smart stumping from the Goresbrook
wicketkeeper, with Hyndman and Didd supporting well with 36 and 28
respectively. It was then Hyndman who completed a fine all-round
performance by removing three Goresbrook batsmen for a personal cost of 41
runs, being supported by Nathan Honeyman with 2-26. However, one major
wicket, which turned the game in Belhus's favour was when Chris Didd got the
vital wicket of Goresbrook's Darren Ivory, who had made a fine 63. Belhus
first eleven captain Richard Waters said: "I was very pleased with the
team's performance, especially that of Chris Didd, who picked up such a
crucial wicket".

Lords International League: vs Asians 03.06.06

ASIANS 2nd XI 155 all out
BELHUS 1st XI 156-5

Asians won the toss and elected to bat but their decision looked to have backfired when they lost their first three batsmen, Chaudhri, Umar and Ishaq with only 17 runs being scored between them. Both openers were removed by the impressive Nathan Honeyman who returned figures 3-21 from nine overs, with Chaudhri falling to the first of three catches by the safe hands of John Forrest. However, the visitors in this Lords International League divison one fixture improved as the Asians middle order began showing some solid resistance. Rauf top scored with 44 until he was brilliantly stumped by Colin Adams off the bowling of Michael Cansdale (2-32 off nine overs) while Awan was run out, but not before he became Asian's second highest scorer with 41. Paul Hall, Richard Waters and Christopher Didd finished for Belhus with 1-23, 1-20 and 1-15 respectively. Like Asians before them, the Belhus innings started with the early departure of the openers by Patel. Martin Guilbert was caught by Rauf for one, while Patel bowled Richard Day for seven runs. The similarities to the Asians innings did not end there. The Belhus middle order rallied too, with Didd making 25, Forrest 28, and Adams 14. However, it was the home skipper, Richard Waters to make the lion's share of the runs with an undefeated 47 in a patient 107-minute stay at the crease, with the winning runs being struck by the captain from the 96th delivery he faced. Cansdale was the other undefeated Belhus batsman with 13. For Asians, Patel finished with 2-21 from seven overs, while there was a wicket apiece for Rauf, Malik and Ishaq.

Tennyson 1st XI 152 all out

Belhus 1st XI maintained their impressive start to the new season with an emphatic victory over Tennyson 1st XI.

Under the early Saturday sunshine, Belhus hit a good total of 236/3 thanks to in form opener Richard Day who batted through the innings and ended up unbeaten on 118. Nick Marns also batted brilliantly – also ending up unbeaten on 72.

Another impressive total from Belhus was again too much for their opponents as they could only muster 152 in reply. Pick of the bowlers was young Michael Cansdale who ended with figures of 4/33. He was supported by Paul Hall who also ended with economical figures of 2/18.

Saturday 6 May 2006 vs Hawks 2nd XI

Belhus 1st XI 274/6 (45 overs)
Hawks 2nd XI 127/4 (27 overs)

Belhus made it another 3 wins in the Lords International League when all their teams won their respective matches.

Against Hawks 2nd string, the 1st team made a hugely impressive 274/6 off their 45 overs thanks largely to half centuries from Mason Wren (81 not out) and Richard Day 68. It has been a great start to the season for young Mason who scored a century in the second team the week previously.

Hawks, however, never stood much of a chance and when the heavens opened, they were well behind the Belhus run rate thus giving the away team the win. Pick of the Belhus bowlers was Mark Winter who contributed with 2/25 off his allotted 9 overs.

Fords in reply could only manage 146 with the wickets shared among Michael Cansdale (4/23), Jim Robertson (3/41) and Paul Hall (3/24)

Saturday 22 April 2006: Friendly vs Chadwell Heath

Belhus 1st XI 201/8
Chadwell Heath 181/8

Belhus 1st XI got the new season off to a flying start with victory in a friendly over Chadwell Heath at North Stifford on Saturday.

After the weeks of preparation work put in by the clubs’ members, the ground was in near perfect condition.

Batting first, Belhus made 201/8 in their 45 overs with skipper Richard Waters top scoring with a fine 44 of 54 deliveries. Important contributions also came from Martin Guilbert (30 off 46) and Michael Cansdale with a quick fire 29 off 31 towards the end of the innings.

Chadwell Heath in reply fell 20 runs short in their 45 overs after only managing 181/8 after some fine spells from the Belhus attack.

Mark Winter and Paul Hall were the pick of the Belhus bowlers with figures off 2-17 off 9 over including 3 maidens for Winter and 2-21 off 9 over for Hall. Nathan Honeyman also produced a fine spell of 1-17 off 7 overs.

The win gives Belhus confidence of a good season ahead which starts this coming

Rooke's men castled at North Stifford

BELHUS 165-7
GORESBROOK 153 all out

Belhus opener Roy Heffernan struck a fine 54 at North Stifford on Saturday. Roy was the mainstay of the innings, batting for one hour and 32 minutes until he was fourth man out with the team score on 98. His innings included five boundaries. Later, there were breezy knocks from James Banner, 33 from 38 balls faced and Michael Cansdale, 16 from 23, while there were fine cameos from James Robertson and Clark Wren in the final few overs of the Belhus innings; Robertson's undefeated 23 came from only 16 deliveries and failed to score from only four of those, while youngster Clark Wren made 12 from just nine balls. Goresbrook used six bowlers and each took a wicket, being Richie Williams 1-15, Martin Rooke 1-16, Lenny Walsh 1-32, Andy Livett 1-40, Craig Irving 1-33 and James Hare 1-27.

Left-arm bowler Bradley Sheridan was impressive, removing both Goresbrook openers. From the fourth delivery of his first over from a spell at the High Road end, he had Walsh smartly caught by Banner at Gulley for a duck to complete a wicket maiden, then from his first delivery of the fifth over he had Ivory caught at cover by Clark Wren for 15. Wren himself then replaced Sheridan from the same end and promptly removed three batsmen from the Goresbrook middle order as Paul McGuire was caught by Heffernan for 20, Adam Giesen was caught by Robertson without score and Jeff Williams was clean bowled for just a single. Wren finished with 3-19 and Sheridan 2-27. Matthew Jones looked in control at the crease and had reached 49 from 66 deliveries but then Mike Inns took a fine leg-side stumping off the bowling of Cliff Cansdale (1-20). Number eight batsman James Hare then staged a dramatic fight back as he put on 41 for the tenth wicket with Andy Livett, plundering 17 runs from the penultimate over. However, from the final ball in this limited overs match, Robertson had the final say by bowling Hare from the final ball, finishing with 3-20 from four overs.

Belhus on the Brink

Belhus's future in the LIL Premier league hangs by a thread after a disappointing defeat to Leyton County on Saturday. The recent good run of home form encouraged skipper Richard Waters to insert the visitors and despite a decent start by County, the home side generally kept the scoring rate in check. Waqas Aktar made a very important 70, which proved to be the highest score of the match as County made 183-8 from their 48 overs. Aussie left armer Mark Baker took 3-51 from 17 overs and Jim Robertson 2-51 from 14. Skipper Rich Waters grabbed 2 for 17 from 4 overs. Wicket keeper Colin Adams has another good day with three stumpings, all standing up to seam bowlers. Belhus had bowled and fielded well and felt they had given themselves a fighting chance of a much needed win.

Alas the Belhus batting did not fire. Only Colin Adams with 28 got past 20 for Belhus as wickets fell regularly. Belhus were unable to recover from their poor start as they slumped to 53-6. Didd 17 and Robertson 14 added some respectability late on as they combined with Adams but the all out total of 122 was well short of the target. Maurice Chambers took 5-24 in ten overs to show his county credentials.

Belhus have one game remaining to save themselves from relegation. They must beat Chadwell Heath and trust to fate that rivals Hawks do not win in their last match.

Noak Hill 1st XI - 305-6
Belhus 1st XI - 168 all out

The recent Belhus revival came to a resounding halt on Saturday as they ran into Champions-elect Noak Hill at Church Road. The visitors put the home side into bat on a damp pitch and after 20 overs Belhus were fairly pleased with their work as they restricted Noak to 69-2. However at this point the home side batting clicked into gear and Belhus found the going extremely tough. The next 27 overs brought an astonishing 236 runs ! Middle order men Ghulfraz and Tani both made hundreds to bury the Belhus attack under a huge pile of boundaries. Chris Didd (3-85) and Jim Robertson (2-72) were the pick of the Belhus bowlers.

Belhus were looking steady in reply as Richard Day and Skipper Richard Waters both made half centuries but the Belhus tail was blown away as numbers seven to eleven failed to score a run between them. The only consolation was that Belhus did manage to pick up four bonus points but it was scant consolation.

Belhus aim to put this game behind them as they only have two games remaining to get themselves out of the relegation places. They remain second from bottom with eight points the gap between them and Hawks.

Belhus shock Fords with emphatic win

Belhus 1st XI 249-5 declared

Ford 1st XI 66 All Out

Belhus stormed to a second consecutive league victory to maintain the charge to get free from the relegation zone.

With rain a constant threat, Ford won the toss and elected to field at North Stifford. Belhus cashed in with the bat as openers Martin Guilbert and Roy Heffernan set off like the proverbial train. Heffernan made a quick fire 34 including 6 boundaries before he fell to Khurram Ahmed (3-53.) The opening stand of 83 set the tone for an aggressive Belhus batting display. Guilbert continued on to plunder a fine 96 including 12 fours and 1 six from just 92 balls. Guilbert was joined by Mark Baker at number 3 – and the Aussie was in a brutal mood with the bat as he showed a fine exhibition of power hitting. He crashed 86 from just 64 balls – including 7 fours and 4 enormous sixes. The pair added 128 for the second wicket and this rapid scoring allowed skipper Richard Waters to declare the innings with the rain clouds gathering. Belhus had racked up 249-5 in just 37.2 overs. The declaration proved to be a master-stroke.

There was a lively start to the Ford innings. Jim Robertson was hit for two fours by Ramraj from the first five deliveries of the first over. But the Belhus man struck back with the sixth delivery when he had the opener caught behind by Colin Adams. When Mark Winter had Junaid Khan caught in the second over Fords were tottering at 12-2 when a brief shower intervened. The rain kept the players off for half an hour but when they play resumed Belhus were hungry for wickets. A run out kept Fords on the slide and then Robertson really caught fire. He bowled Sibet Hussain for a duck, had Khurram Ahmed caught at slip by Mark Winter, Shazad Malik was stumped down the leg side by Adams for 1 and finally he had Shaz Husnain caught behind by Adams first delivery. This astonishing burst had Fords in disarray. Mark Winter then got in on the act as he removed the stubborn Yazdani for 37. Winter cleaned up Karim and Javed to whistle Fords all out for just 66 and give Belhus a crushing victory by 183 runs.

Jim Robertson finished with 5-33 and Winter 4-30 as Fords were routed in just 17.2 overs. Adams kept excellently taking three catches and a stumping.

Belhus have reduced the points gap to 10 behind Grays as they strive to stay in the Premier division of the Lords International League. Next week they travel to Noak Hill hoping to keep their run going.

Tense Victory for Belhus

Belhus recorded a much needed League win on Saturday in a tight, low scoring affair as they overcame a battling Hawks side at North Stifford.
Belhus recent improvement in form continued as Hawks elected to bat and opening bowlers Chris Didd (1-38) and Jim Robertson (1-27) kept things extremely tight as Hawks edged along to 68-3 from the first 23 overs. Visiting Skipper Hubert Ryan (28) threatened to break loose but spinner Michael Cansdale (2-17) removed Ryan and it was left to A.Krishnan (59) to salvage the visitors innings. Despite Krishnan's efforts Belhus were able to restrict the visitors to 132 all out - this was chiefly due to Belhus skipper Richard Waters taking 3-16 to wrap up the innings.

Any thoughts Belhus had of quickly crashing the runs off were dashed as the Hawks attack rose to the challenge of restricting the home side. The Belhus batsman did knuckle down and a war of attrition ensued. Opener Tony Lincoln made a petient 15 from 51 balls but wickets fell steadily as pace men Cornelius (2-23) and Jeffrey (2-28) really tested the home side. Belhus were thankful to the rock-like Roy Heffernan who played a vital innings at number four. He took everything the Hawks attack could throw at him as he patiently ground out 35 not out to top score for Belhus - his innings lasted 97 balls and he hit three fours. At 107-7 the match was still in the balance but Chris Didd joined Heffernan and his 19 not out from 22 balls with three fours ensured that Belhus came home the victors by three wickets in an enthrallingly close contest.

The maximum 24 points keep Belhus in with a chance of escaping the relegation zone, they are now 19 points behind both Chadwell Heath and Grays and Chadwell with four games remaining.

Rain robs Belhus at North Stifford

May and Baker 200 for 7

Belhus 46-0

RAIN STOPPED PLAY - Match Abandoned as a Draw.

Belhus were looking in line for a much needed League win on Saturday when the rain spoiled their party at North Stifford. Openers Tony Lincoln and Martin Guilbert were making good progress as Belhus reached 46 for no loss from eleven overs when the rains came and halted proceedings.

Earlier, Belhus had won the toss and elected to bowl first. They did well to restrict the visitors to 200 for 7 from their 48 overs. The main wicket takers were Mark Winter, who took 2 for 35 from 13 overs and Jim Robertson who grabbed 2 for 19 as the home side kept May and Baker in check.

Victory looked on the cards for Belhus but the weather dashed their hopes.

Home Draw

Belhus 1st XI 229-9 dec
Snaresbrook 1st XI 202-5 (match drawn)

Belhus had to settle for a draw when they entertained Lord's International League premier division basement boys Snaresbrook in this latest league clash at North Stifford. On another peach of a batting track, Belhus failed to find the necessary firepower to dismiss the visitors on their top class surface and a few dropped catches along the way did not help matters. Nevertheless, there was some steady batting throughout the Belhus innings with skipper Richard Waters taking the shine off the new ball with a patient 47 from 97 deliveries in exactly 100 minutes at the crease, while Richard Day and Martin Guilbert both made 35. Mark Baker and Colin Adams contributed with 26 and 18 respectively, while Dave Gibson made 12. For the visitors, Hamad Babar took 5-50 and Furkarn Khahiq 2-34 while Furkarn completed a good all-round performance by striking 33 runs. Wicket-takers for Belhus were Mark Baker, 2-52, Michael Cansdale, 1-41, and Ben Marns 1-27.
