Youth Tour of Sussex - Day Five

Belhus U16 205-6
Henfield U16 97-8

Such was the size of the tour party to Sussex, Belhus staged two games on the Friday of the tour.
In this 30-overs per side game, opening batsman Billy Winter struck a fine 89 which included 13 fours and one huge six over mid-wicket to the longest side of the playing area. His partner, Danny Norris, was run out for a good 36 toend a fine 99-run partnership for the first wicket. Dale Kenyon boosted the tourists' score with a fine undefeated 31. After tea, Henfield struggled as Alex Jennings and Dale Kenyon took 2-28 and 2-18 respectively, but then George Brooks turned the screw with his off-spin to claim 3-24 from six fine overs as Henfield finished considerably short of their target.

Belhus 200-7
Eastergate 191 all out

To round off a very successful and enjoyable Sussex Tour, Belhus added a last-minute second Friday fixture to their itinerary with a club game at Eastergate. This ensured that all the Belhus junior cricketers in the tour party were in action on the final day of the day. Joining the junior players for this game were senior members who had been with the tour party all week. Roy Heffernan struck 57, Bradley Sheridan scored 37 while Brian Edwards and Ricki Ellis were undefeated at the close with 35 and 18 respectively. After a fine tea, Eastergate were dismissed for 191 in the final over of this 35 overs per side match. Edwards completed a fine all-round performance by claiming 5-28 from his left-arm spin, but it was the juniors, in particular Ryan Wells, Tony Ellis and Donovan Wright who really put the hosts on the back foot and were always below the required run rate.

Youth Tour of Sussex - Day Four

Worthing U16 69 all out
Belhus U16 70-6

Undoubtedly this was one of the best performances from a Belhus youth touring team in recent years. Only Jack Steel, Jamie Parker and Josh Goldsmith reached double figures with 13, 11 and 10 respectively as Dale Kenyon took 4-14 from five overs, George Brooks 2-3 from one over, Ricki Ellis 2-5 from five overs (two maidens) while Billy Winter and Jason Peters took one wicket apiece. However, after tea at the Manor Ground, Belhus struggled with the bat as Belhus suffered a mini-collapse from 32-2 to 33-6. However, Kenyon and Peters saw Belhus to an excellent win as they both finished unbeaten on 16. For the hosts, Passmore took 3-17 from five overs, Parker took 2-20 and Colley 1-12.

Youth Tour of Sussex - Day Three

St. Matthias U16 168-6
Belhus U16 148 all out

After the abandonment of the fixture at Littlehampton the previous day, Belhus made the short journey to Patcham. Alfie Sanders-Earley struck a fine 58 for the home side until he was caught by Ricki Ellis off the bowling of Michael Fogg for 58. Ollie Kazemi fired a quick 34 form only 18 deliveries to put his team in a strong position, while Fogg finished with 2-27 from five overs. Harry Levy and Ryan Wells, both members of the Belhus U11 squad, were given opportunities to bowl and both took a wicket. Levy finished with 1-9 from two overs, while Wells was slightly more expensive, finishing with 1-42 from three overs. Levy had St. Matthias number six batsmen Brendan McWenya caught behind by George Brooks for 11 while number eight bat Jacob Sehilt was caught by Billy Winter off Levy without score.

Belhus made a brave attempt to chase a tough target through opening batsman Dale Kenyon, who was eventually caught behind by wicketkeeper Dan Westcott for 33 in the 13th over with the score on 49. Winter contributed ten runs, but Fogg struck a fine 47 from 46 balls faced in a one hour and eleven minute stay at the crease, hitting eight boundaries in the process. Gavin Jefferies, batting in the lower order, struck the fourth ball he received for a huge six over wide mid-on towards the cowfield and progressed to a rapid 15 from ten deliveries. However, from the eleventh delivery, Jefferies was stumped then Fogg became another of stumper Westcott's victims. The gloveman ended with two stumpings, Jefferies and Wells, plus two catches, accounting for Kenyon and Fogg.

Of the home side bowling attack, Shaun Lewis took 3-23 from six overs, while Sussex county representative player Emma Gill caught the eye of the Belhus players by finishing with 1-16 from four overs, including one maiden. Sule, Schilt, McWwenya and Sanders-Earley took a wicket each.

Youth Tour of Sussex - Day Two

Due to heavy rain, the scheduled fixture at Littlehampton, Clapham and Patching CC was cancelled due to a waterlogged ground. However, after a relaxing morning, the squad took part in a marathon five-hour indoor six-a-side cricket competition. In the evening, the tour party went ten pin bowling, with Ricki Ellis having the highest game score with 147. Throughout much of the day and into the late evening, the heavy rain continued and next day's fixture, at St.Matthias CC, looked in doubt.

Belhus U16s Demolish Harold Wood

Belhus CC 293 - 8
Harold Wood CC 137 ao

Belhus entertained Harold Wood this week in the latest round of the Matchplay and opened the batting. An outstanding display of batting between (Fogg 91) and (Jeffries 93) producing 192 runs for the first wicket gave the home side an unassailable platform to build. Solid batting contributions from (Kenyon) 33 and (Sheridan) 16 helped the home side to a very respectable score after 40 overs. The pick of the bowlers for Harold Wood was Wallington with figures of 3.3-14-3 Harold Wood then went in to bat and began the chase with some excellent stands by (Guilford) 49 and (Johnson) 25. But they ran into a Belhus team who could do no wrong with the ball, and were in sparkling form in the field. Essex Academy Player Alan Ison smashes 206 not out at North Stifford

Upminster U16 343-3
Belhus U16 170 all out

A sensational display of batting from Upminster's opening pair of Harry
Jenkins and Alan Ison on a first class pitch at North Stifford saw the
visitors romp home to a fine 173-run victory over Belhus in the Essex
Matchplay competition. Essex youth academy member Ison struck an undefeated
206 from 128 balls. His opening partner Jenkins reached 104 until Belhus
off-spinner Michael Fogg did exceptionally well to hold on to a fierce drive
for a well-deserved caught and bowled chance. Jenkins received 88 balls and
the opening pair put on a massive 217 for the first wicket. Matthew Tigg
became Fogg's second victim when he was bowled by a brilliant delivery from
Fogg. Bowling round the wicket to the left-handed Tigg, the ball pitched
outside the line of leg stump, only to turn sharply off the pitch and to
strike the off and middle stumps. Fogg finished with 2-88 from eight overs.
Despite the run-fest, Belhus kept working hard in the field, exemplified
by a fine first-class catch by Dale Kenyon at deep-mid on to dismiss Elliot
Bussey off the bowling of Sachin Sewgobind for just three runs. If Ison had
produced a batting performance worthy of the first-class game, then Kenyon
had matched it in the field, albeit momentarily, with his stunning catch.

After the break, both Belhus openers, Fogg and Gavin Jefferies, made 18
until they were dismissed. Fogg missed a straight delivery while Jefferies
was caught at first slip by Ison. Four other Belhus batsmen reached double
figures, being Sewgobind, 29, George Brooks, 13, Ian Sanderson, 10, and Dale
Kenyon, who helped put on 67 for the seventh wicket in a fine knock of 46.
The Upminster bowlers amongst the wickets were Jack O'Dowd, 1-17, Jamie
O'Dell, 1-17, Ison 2-10, Ben Langston 1-17 and Michael Titterton 1-26.

Belhus come through in Close Encounter

Belhus U16 125 all out
Benfleet U16 106 all out

Belhus entertained Benfleet on Sunday (10th June 1007) in the latest round
of the Matchplay and opened the batting. A solid opening partnership
between Michael Fogg and Gavin Jefferies gave the home side a good platform
to build from and was only broken by the unpredictable bounce of the
Ockendon pitch. Some excellent contributions from Dale Kenyon 32 and George
Brooks 13 were the pick of the bunch for the home side who were restricted
to 125 runs by some excellent bowling from the visitors most notably from
John Bull, 4-20 from six overs.

Benfleet then went in to bat and began the chase with some excellent stands
by Brody 20 and Johnson 28. But they ran into a Belhus team who could do no
wrong with the ball, and were in sparkling form in the field. The wickets
came at a steady rate, with strong bowling displays coming from Bradley
Sheridan, who took five wickets for just seven runs from six overs
(including one maiden) and with Jamie Hanks and Jefferies both contributing
with a wicket apiece and some stunning wicket keeping from Fogg, Belhus
dismissed the visitors to take a well earned victory and look forward to
hosting Upminster this coming Sunday in this prestigious competition.

Galiant Belhus lose by six wickets to Shenfield

Belhus CC 165 for 9
Shenfield CC 166 for 4

This was Belhus’s first sortie into the Matchplay arena for a few years, and they made a very promising start despite losing to a very strong Shenfield side which boasted a number of Essex youth players. A solid opening partnership between Michael Fogg, 33, and Gavin Jefferies, 7 runs, gave the home side a good platform to build from and with some excellent contributions from Bradley Sheridan, 27, Dale Kenyon, 16 and Jason Peters with ten runs, the home side were able to reach 165 runs from their allotted forty overs.

Shenfield then went in to bat and began to take control of the tie with an outstanding innings from Ekers, who made 70 not out. Sutherland gave good support with 28. A spirited bowling display came from (Thomas) 5-1-39 (Fogg) 6-1-1-22 (Sheridan) 6-1-1-20 and (Hanks) 3-1-1-28. Belhus took the bold step to enter this top class competition to give young Cricketers the chance to bridge the gap between Youth and Adult Cricket and would welcome any players who would like the chance to play in this show case for young Essex talent. U16 INDOOR CRICKET REPORTS

BELHUS ARE SOUTH ESSEX DISTRICT INDOOR U16 CHAMPIONS

Belhus U16 95-4
Horndon on the Hill U16 86 all out

Belhus defeated Horndon on the Hill CC by the slender margin of just nine runs in the grand finale of the district board's indoor youth programme at Grays School on Friday evening (30th March 2007). Belhus, batting first, were off to a patient, but solid start, managing only 36 runs off the first six overs, being the half-way point of their innings. Opening batsman Gavin Jefferies was eventually dismissed when he was run out off the last ball of the ninth over, which ended an opening profitable partnership of 58 with Bradley Sheridan. However, it could have been a different story as Jefferies had been dropped on the third ball of the game. Belhus added a further 37 runs in a hurried blitz spanning the final three overs, which saw Sheridan retire on 26 not out, Jack Thomas contributed ten runs and Danny Norris ended undefeated on 17.

In reply, Horndon were ahead on the scores comparison throughout the game until the final over. Strong batting and good running from Max Osborne took him to 26 and retirement, like Sheridan of Belhus earlier, but only Luke Clements, with 14, was able to score many runs with Ryan Plom and Frankie Paisley dismissed for just four runs each, while sharp Belhus fielding saw Ian Clark and Conor Cutts run out with scores of four and five respectively. With just one over remaining, Horndon were 79-3, an identical position to Belhus at the same stage. Left-armer Sheridan took just five balls to wipe out the rest of the Horndon batsmen, bowling Paisley, Clements and the returning Osbourne, finishing with 3-17 off 2.5 overs.

Competition organiser Vic Peters, for the South Essex District Cricket Board, said: "Both teams were a credit to their respective clubs and gave it their all. Congratulations are due to all the players who performed so well in a memorable final".
