SUSSEX YOUTH TOUR 2008 MATCH REPORTS

A total of 46 members, including 16 junior players, joined Belhus Cricket Club's eleventh youth tour of Sussex. Based at Roedean School overlooking the English Channel, this was one of the more successful tours staged by the club in recent years, with victories being achieved at St. Matthias, Henfield and also against a strong Lewes Priory team. There was just one defeat at Littlehampton. The tour party found the facilities on offer at the host clubs to be of an exceptionally high standard. Outside of their cricket activities the juniors took part in Badminton, Ten-pin bowling, Golf, Swimming, Water Polo and Tennis. The Belhus club would like to acknowledge the support of its sponsors for making this tour possible, in particular the Newbery Bat Company of Sussex for equipment donations.

Belhus U17 209-7 dec
St Matthias U17 93 all out

Belhus started strongly in their first game played at the University of Sussex sports ground at Falmer. The tourists were tottering at 85 for 5, but then George Brooks joined Gavin Jefferies and these two both scored 63 in a partnership worth 83 for the sixth wicket. The stand was finally broken when opener Jefferies was dismissed, bowled by Yates having scored nine boundaries. Other Belhus batsmen in double figures were Dale Kenyon with 15 and Danny Norris, who scored 29. Norris continued his good work after tea as he claimed 5-17 from seven overs (one maiden) to prevent any chance of a home victory, but Belhus still had work to do as the St. Matthias tail made a valiant effort to earn a draw. Taylor, batting at eight, carefully farmed the strike as number nine bat was brilliantly caught at short mid-wicket off the bowling of Ryan Wells for 4 while Taylor himself was last man out, dismissed by Kenyon in a thrilling last-over conclusion as Belhus won with the hosts just four balls from safety. Home batsmen in double figures were Yates, 14, Salkild, 26 and Taylor, 15. Supporting Norris with the ball for Belhus were Tony Ellis, 1-21 from four overs, Billy Winter 1-13 from five overs (one maiden), Wells 1-8 from four overs (two maidens) and Kenyon 1-11 from 5.2 overs which also included two maidens.

Littlehampton, Clapham & Patching U17 175-4
Belhus U17 128-8

Rain interruptions restricted this fixture to 25 overs per side. The hosts put on 65 for the first wicket through Askew, 45 and James, 69, then Greig scored 21, Budd 17 as Littlehampton piled on the runs. For Belhus, Billy Winter was top bowler with 2-29 from five overs while George Brooks and Danny Joyce picked up 1-29 and 1-14 respectively. After a tea break extended by rain, Belhus had no fewer than six batsmen in double figures but none could produce a match-winning performance. Brooks struck 14, Winter 18, Joyce 12, Gavin Jefferies top scored with 26, Michael Fogg hit 15 and Jason Peters contributed 14 runs to the total. For Littlehampton, Clifton took 2-28, Askew 2-10 and Parnell 2-12.

Belhus U17 232-7
Henfield U17 202 all out

In a superb afternoon's cricket hampered only by cold, gale-force winds, Michael Fogg struck a maiden century by hitting nine fours and six sixes in a fine innings of 101. Jason Peters cashed in too on the picturesque Henfield ground by scoring 51 in a knock which included three sixes and three fours. Ryan Prendergast and Dale Kenyon gave valuable support with their willow use by scoring 17 and 12 respectively. In reply, Henfield's Scott made 53 and Gue hit 34 as Kenyon took 3-26 from eight overs (one maiden) and Peters 3-6 from four overs (one maiden), these two were supported well by Christopher Sharp 1-45, Owen Jefferies 1-23 and Billy Winter, one wicket for just two runs. Harry Levy came on to bowl the final over with the last Henfield pair at the crease, all it took was one "Levy special" to dismiss the eleventh Henfield man, caught behind by Norris, to conclude a fine match at another fine venue.

Belhus B 204 all out
Belhus A 172-9

With their scheduled match at the Gullivers Sports Ground, Bexhill, cancelled by their Sidley CC hosts due to a waterlogged pitch, the tourists remained at Roedean where they were offered use of the outdoor cricket pitch and nets. By this time the Summer storm had passed, leaving the contest to proceed with the English Channel's millpond flatness providing a surreal backdrop to the game. Players and spectators could be forgiven for thinking this was Barbados rather than Brighton. In the first innings, batsmen in double figures were Dale Kenyon, 13, Danny Chandler, 57, Ian Wright 37 and Michael Cansdale with 17. In reply, contributions with the bat came from George Brooks 18, Ryan Wells 16, Danny Joyce, 48, Brian Edwards 18, Michael Fogg 20 and Danny Norris was undefeated on 16 at the close.Top wicket-takers in the match were Fogg 3-13, Edwards 3-15, Tony Ellis 2-20, Harry Levy 2-14, Ricki Ellis 2-9, Ryan Prendergast 2-19 while brothers Gavin and Owen Jefferies both returned 1-9.

Lewes Priory U17 163 all out
Belhus U17 164-6

Ricki Ellis produced a devastating display of medium pace bowling at the Stanley Turner Memorial ground on Friday to round off this hugely enjoyable and successful Belhus youth tour. The hosts reputation for having a strong squad at this age group counted for nothing as Ellis was concerned. Coming on first change, he had opener Bristow dismissed by an excellent diving catch from Danny Norris for 30 off his very first delivery and then followed it up just two balls later by having number three batsman Bawd brilliantly stumped by Michael Fogg for just six runs. Ricki's second over was no less dramatic, taking two further wickets, this time with consecutive deliveries with the second and third balls. York and Player were both bowled without score as the stong Lewes side were all at sea, having collapsed from 52 for one wicket to 58-5. Ellis finished with 4-16 from seven overs, which included two maidens. Belhus bowlers Dale Kenyon took 2-27 from 7.1 overs (one maiden) and Billy Winter claimed 3-48 from eight overs (one maiden). Ryan Prendergast bowled tidily without reward, conceding just nine runs from four overs while Owen Jefferies picked up 1-37 from six overs, providing the chance for wicketkeeper Fogg to pick up his second stumping of the match. For the home side, Wade hit 21, Lee 24, Hartridge 28 and Secret 12. After tea, Belhus looked slightly lost at 66-6, with Gavin Jefferies, 13, Danny Norris 8, Fogg 23, George Brooks 5 and Danny Chandler 6 all back in the pavilion, but an unbroken seventh wicket stand of 98 between Danny Joyce and Kenyon saw Belhus home. Joyce hit six boundaries in a knock of 53 not out while Kenyon yielded five fours and one maximum in an undefeated 39. For the hosts, Bowd took 4-11 from six overs while Secret and Eyles took one wicket apiece.

Belhus U13s put up a creditable performance when they travelled to Wanstead where they found an opposition containing no fewer than three South of England representative players in this Essex Bradford Cup quarter-final, which is part of the MCC Spirit of Cricket National Club Championship. Belhus, batting first, had Ryan Wells and Owen Jefferies reach double figures with 10 and 12 respectively as good tight bowling kept the reins on the visiting batsmen. Rehan Hassan took 2-13 from four overs (one maiden) and Asad Ahmed took 1-24, also from four overs. After the break, tight opening spells from Tom Wood and Max Scott saw Wanstead reaching only five runs from the first five overs, but then Hassan and Kishan Velani cut loose to accelerate the home score. Tom Wood is leading bowler as EABC earn draw at Felsted

Felsted School U14 148-7 dec
Essex Association of Boys Clubs U14 61-6

Thanks to the hard work of the Felsted groundstaff this match was able to proceed. On the inevitable slow, damp surface, Felsted, having been asked to bat first, were reduced to 46 for the loss of three wickets, claimed by Mark Pavitt, Jack Brunton (both members of Orsett cricket club) and Tom Wood (Belhus Cricket Club). The fourth wicket fell with a good caught and bowled from Richard Hall (Hannakins Farm F.C.) however George batted superbly for the host school with 43 before being caught by Michael Bolter (Upminster Cricket Club) off the bowling of George Gibbon (Orsett Cricket Club). Wood picked up his second wicket and a run out produced the seventh wicket before a rearguard action by Lewis with 50 not out resulted in Felsted setting the Essex Association of Boys Clubs 149 to win from the 29 overs remaining. Wood was the pick of the Essex bowlers with 2-21 from six overs.

Following the loss of four early wickets the visitors staged a great recovery with partnerships between Sam Weight (Frenford Clubs) and Hall worth 23 and an unbeaten partnership of 25 between Hall and Brunton. In good support were Tom Wood, 15 and Daniel Dreher, 16. For Orsett, Daniel Ashford took 2-16 from four overs, which included one maiden.

After the break, George Gibbon of Orsett, like Wells before him, reached the compulsory retirement limit, but that was where the similarity of the two innings ended. The Belhus bowlers were amongst the wickets and only Bradley Boreham offered Gibbon support with 18. With nine wickets down, Gibbon was free to resume his innings. He promptly struck a six between mid-wicket and square leg and it was game on. The very next delivery, bowled by Daniel Dreher, seamed its way beneath Gibbon's bat as Belhus edged home by just eight runs. Dreher finished with 3-22 from four overs and Callum Thomas took 3-5 from two overs. For the visitors, Charlie Gleisinger produced a mean four over spell by limiting Belhus to just four runs off his bowling, thanks to two maidens. Ryan Wells gave valuable support and completed a fine all-round performance with 2-14 from three overs and a sharp catch at slip was gratefully accepted into the Wells portfolio as Stanford lost wickets at regular intervals. Eventually, Stanford finished just one run short of the tie to give Belhus victory by the smallest margin possible. Wood, Harry Levy and Callum Thomas also picked up a wicket apiece for the home side, despite the best efforts of Stanford's Sam Sewell, who top scored with 25.

Tom Wood makes debut as Captain of Essex Boys Clubs at Eton College

Essex Association of Boys Clubs U14 101 all out
Eton College U14 105-4

The Essex Association of Boys Clubs U14 squad, captained by Tom Wood of Belhus CC, travelled west to Berkshire for their first game of the season. The Eton captain Wells won the toss and elected to field in perfect conditions. Essex opening batsman George Gibbons struck a fine 41 but George's opening colleague Matthew Broadbent was the only other visiting batsman to reach double figures with ten runs. Gibbons was unlucky to be dismissed just nine runs short of what would have been a deserved half-century; he was surprised by a delivery which lifted appreciably, found the top edge of the bat and was gratefully caught by Fitzroy. A keen college attack saw Crosswaite, Crewdson and Vaidyanadhan pick up two wickets each while Booth-Clebban, Morris and Read supported well with one wicket each. If the home bowling was good, the outfielding was even better as all but one of the Essex batsmen were caught, with the other dismissal occurring when Mark Pavitt was run out without score. Morris took three excellent reflex catches off drives at short mid-off as Eton piled on relentless pressure on the visitors.

After tea, Wells led his team to victory with an undefeated 56, but not before Gibbons struck by taking the wicket of the other Eton opener, Briggs, who was caught by Joshi Read for ten runs. Soon after, Read was brilliantly stumped by Tom Leach, also off the bowling of Gibbons for 6, to leave Eton at 40 for two wickets after twelve overs. Read was introduced to the attack and promptly took two wickets in six deliveries when he had Fitzroy trapped leg before for 11 and then Crosswaite was caught by Pavitt without score. The college suffered no further setbacks and emerged as deserved winners after 27 overs. Essex Boys' Clubs cricket manager Dave Shelton said: "Another 30 runs by our lads and a little bit more luck, the game would have been much closer. The ball dropped at least five times in areas where, on another day, the ball would have gone to hand. Although the boys lost, they played well and can all take something from this game, having enjoyed their day at Eton. We would like to thank Paul and his team from Eton who made us feel very welcome along with the parents who made the journey with us offering their support".

U13s in Bradford Cup first round victory

Belhus U13 78-4
Southend on Sea U13 55-5

Belhus progressed to the second round of the Essex Bradford Cup on Sunday morning following this 23-run victory over Southend at North Stifford. Belhus had three players in double figures, being Harry Levy with 18 not out, while Owen Jefferies scored 17 and Tom Wood 11. P. Kearney was the visitors most effective bowler with 1-13 from four overs, which included one maiden. After the break, Butcher top scored for Southend with 13, but the home bowlers successfully defended their team's score through Tony Ellis 1-6 from two overs, while Ryan Wells and Tom Wood both bowled a maiden over each in returning 1-5 from three overs and 1-8 from four overs respectively.

Jack Panteli of Belhus scores 30 for Essex Association of Boys Clubs at Chigwell School

Chigwell School U12 115 all out
Essex Association of Boys Clubs U12 116-9

The Essex Association of Boys' Clubs representative team edged to victory in a thrilling contest at Chigwell School. Essex won the toss and invited the hosts to take first knock, which seemed a sensible decision, given that Chigwell had scored just seven runs from the first six overs and lost a wicket in that period. However, the school eleven increased their run-rate appreciably and after 15 overs Chigwell had accelerated the score to 60 for two wickets, but in the remaining 15 overs of this home team's innings, although a further 65 runs were added, a collapse ensued, largely through the efforts of Ellis Stevens of Orsett CC and Mathew Lewis of Belhus CC, who both finished with 2-12. There was also one wicket apiece for William Bottoms and Luke Williams of Upminster CC, Harshall Bablo of Frenford Boys Club and Jack Panteli of Belhus CC. Host captain Cordelia top scored in the innings with 36.

After a fine tea much appreciated by the Essex players, Alex Ward of Upminster CC was dismissed early for two runs and was followed by Ryan Wells of Belhus CC for 12, leaving the visitors on 23-2, but Panteli and Luke Williams with 26 runs, got their heads down and the run rate gradually increased to the extent that these two put on 47 in only seven overs as Panteli struck a fine 30 until he was fourth man out. This sparked a collapse worse than that suffered by Chigwell earlier in the day as the Boys Clubs' team lost six wickets for the addition of a mere 14 runs. The panic had set in but to calm all visiting nerves, Billy Daltrey of Umpinster CC strode to the wicket to hit his first ball behind square leg for four and in doing so gave his team a fine one-wicket victory. The pick of the home bowlers was Albert with 3-13. Speaking after the game, events co-ordinator Keith Cramner of the Chelmsford-based charity said: "The lads were all happy and excited to win such a close contest. Well done to all the players from both sides for making this an enjoyable game and it was certainly played in the right spirit. A big thank you to Chigwell School for being such marvellous hosts".

The Essex Association of Boys Clubs representative cricket programme for 2008 started with a visit by the under 12 squad to Kimbolton School, near Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire. Kimbolton batted first and were soon in a commanding position through a first wicket partnership of 93 between Biddle and Chitty. The breakthrough finally came when Gopal Sagoo from Upminster cricket club bowled Biddle for 52. Sagoo finished with 2-25 and he received valuable support from club colleague Jon Murphy with 1-26, Hashim Mahmud of Frenford boys club with 1-13, Ellis Stevens of Orsett cricket club with 1-20 and Craig Urch of Ingatestone boys' club who claimed 1-20.

Chasing 157 for victory in the post-tea session, there was a huge set-back when the visiting Essex boys lost early wickets and were struggling at 19-3. Jack Panteli from Belhus cricket club became Kimbolton's fourth victim when he was caught and bowled by Qadeer but Sagoo and Harshal Babla from Frenford boys club batted through the final ten overs of the game to salvage a draw, with Harshal falling to the last ball of the day.

Belhus 200-7
Eastergate 191 all out

To round off a very successful and enjoyable Sussex Tour, Belhus added a last-minute second Friday fixture to their itinerary with a club game at Eastergate. Joining the junior players for this game were senior members who had been with the tour party all week. Youth Tour of Sussex - Day Three

St. Matthias U16 168-6
Belhus U16 148 all out

After the abandonment of the fixture at Littlehampton the previous day, Belhus made the short journey to Patcham. Alfie Sanders-Earley struck a fine 58 for the home side until he was caught by Ricki Ellis off the bowling of Michael Fogg for 58. Ollie Kazemi fired a quick 34 form only 18 deliveries to put his team in a strong position, while Fogg finished with 2-27 from five overs. Harry Levy and Ryan Wells, both members of the Belhus U11 squad, were given opportunities to bowl and both took a wicket. Levy finished with 1-9 from two overs, while Wells was slightly more expensive, finishing with 1-42 from three overs. Levy had St. Matthias number six batsmen Brendan McWenya caught behind by George Brooks for 11 while number eight bat Jacob Sehilt was caught by Billy Winter off Levy without score.

Belhus made a brave attempt to chase a tough target through opening batsman Dale Kenyon, who was eventually caught behind by wicketkeeper Dan Westcott for 33 in the 13th over with the score on 49. Winter contributed ten runs, but Fogg struck a fine 47 from 46 balls faced in a one hour and eleven minute stay at the crease, hitting eight boundaries in the process. Gavin Jefferies, batting in the lower order, struck the fourth ball he received for a huge six over wide mid-on towards the cowfield and progressed to a rapid 15 from ten deliveries. However, from the eleventh delivery, Jefferies was stumped then Fogg became another of stumper Westcott's victims. The gloveman ended with two stumpings, Jefferies and Wells, plus two catches, accounting for Kenyon and Fogg.

Of the home side bowling attack, Shaun Lewis took 3-23 from six overs, while Sussex county representative player Emma Gill caught the eye of the Belhus players by finishing with 1-16 from four overs, including one maiden. Sule, Schilt, McWwenya and Sanders-Earley took a wicket each.

Billy Winter of Belhus hit three boundaries in a fine knock of 20 but received no support from his batting colleagues as Belhus were dismissed for just 38 in this South Essex Youth League match at Horndon Recreation Ground on Friday (10th August). It is unusual for U15 youth league games to be played so late in the season but Belhus youth fixtures had been particularly hard hit by the monsoon-llike weather of the past few months. Belhus were destroyed by Ben Reed who, from a four over spell, took six wickets for just eight runs (two maidens). Connor Price wrapped up the Belhus innings with three wickets without conceding a single run from 1.4 overs.

Belhus U11 265-1
Eastwood U11 218-3

His partner, Lucas Crudgington, finished on two not out as these two put on 20 runs in this eight a side pairs fixture. The only Belhus wicket to fall came in the second pairing of Sam Hall and Donovan Wright. Hall was bowled by Ryan Creasey, who finished with 1-4 from three impressive overs, one of which was a maiden. Wright finished undefeated with five runs and Hall finished with two runs. This second pair had managed to progress the Belhus total for a further nine runs as Belhus progressed towards a competitive total. The partnership of Ryan Wells and Harry Levy then contributed a further 18 runs, not all of them off the bat as Wells finished on two not out and Levy seven not out. Then to finish the innings, Bradley Mason scored four not out and skipper Ashleigh Hall finished undefeated without score as Belhus eventually closed on 265. For Eastwood, Billy Morrant did not take a wicket but bowled impressively to finish with 0-5 from three overs.

After the break, Eastwood opened their innings through Morrant and Archie Matthews. Morrant had struck three boundaries and had two other shots from which runs were scored, to boost his personal tally to 15 not out, until the last ball of his pair's alloted overs, when he somehow managed to hit the ball on to his own wicket. Matthews finished undefeated with eight runs. The visitors then had to wait a long time for the next wickets, as they came in the final pairing, comprising Creasey and Tom Aldridge. Needing to score at ten runs per over to clinch victory, the run chase was quickly thwarted by the quick feet of Mason, running in from cover point to take a well judged catch off the bowling of Levy, who finished with 1-4 from three overs, which included one maiden. Other Belhus bowlers amongst the wickets were Wright, 1-12 from two overs and Mason, 1-5, also from two overs.

Belhus U16 143 all out
Saffron Walden U16 144-8

Belhus travelled to Saffron Walden in the final round of group matches of Essex Cricket Board's Matchplay competition on Sunday (22nd July). A solid opening partnership of 36 between Michael Fogg and Gavin Jefferies gave the visiting side a good start and this was further aided by a solid contribution from George Brooks in the face of some of some excellent bowling from a home side boasting four Essex youth representative players. An outstanding contribution from Jason Peters, 43, including two magnificent sixes helped the visitors build a credible total of 143. There was an excellent bowling display from the hosts, most notably from Hancock, 2-15 from three overs.

Saffron Walden then went in to bat and began the chase with some excellent batting from Pearson 36 and Herd, 22. But they ran into a Belhus team who were in a determined mood and it showed with some sparkling form in the field. The wickets came at a steady rate, bowling displays coming from Bradley Sheridan, 3-27 from six overs, including one maiden. To round off a fine all round performance, Peters bagged 4-13 from six overs. There was also some top draw catches taken, most notably a diving one handed catch from Jamie Hanks.

and two other dismissals to thwart a brave Belhus attempt to win the game.
For the home side, opening bowler Perry Barnes took one wicket for just one
run from two overs (one maiden), Jason Stanhope took 2-6 from three overs

Later, a shorter ball kept very low and struck the base of the wicket. The leading Ilford bowler was Nabeel with 2-15 from two overs.

U14 INDOOR CRICKET REPORTS

Belhus U14 118-4
Horndon on the Hill U14 67 all out

Belhus emerged as deserved winners in the South Essex District Cricket Board's U14 indoor six a side play-off on Friday (5th January 2007). Belhus batted first and were off to a flyer, putting on 44 for the first wicket. Determined Belhus were intent on victory and added a further 72 runs from the final six overs to finish on a very impressive total. Top scorers for Belhus were Ben Palmer, 43 not out and Jack Day, 27 not out. Other Belhus runs came from the bat of Billy Winter who yielded 20 runs and Connor Day who chipped in with ten. After the short break, Horndon's run chase got off to the worst possible start when they lost Joe Joyce second ball, caught behind off Jack Day off the bowling of Connor, his brother. Gary Ginsburgh and Ryan Plom the stepped up the run rate, which was going well until Ginsburgh was caught for 24 off the bowling of Jai Chopra. Some excellent ground fielding by Laurie Hawkes and Chopra kept pressure on the Horndon batsmen though Plom responded in magnificent fashion by striking 31 before be was caught and bowled. The final Horndon wicket eventually went down with the score on 67 leaving Belhus the winners by 51 runs.

BELHUS SQUAD: Jai Chopra, Connor Day, Jack Day, Laurie Hawkes, Ben Palmer, Ryan Prendergast, Billy Winter.

Youth Tour Report - Day Five: Eastbourne Air Show and Seaford CC

Seaford Youth 247-9
Belhus Youth 100 all out

Terry Squires and Connor Thomas opened the bowling at a bright and breezy Salts Recreation Ground on Friday afternoon (18th August 2006). The Tourists did not have to wait long for their first breakthrough as Price was caught by Dale Kenyon off Squires for ten runs from the fifth over of the day. Other opening bat Lawrence reached 32 before being bowled by Jason Peters. Meanwhile, M. Pitts struck a fine 70 from 66 deliveries in a seventy-five minute stay at the crease until he was trapped leg before by Michael Fogg. Pitts had struck thirteen fours on his way to become the hosts top scorer. Haslem supported well with 59 from 52 balls faced which included ten fours until his run out dismissal. Later, Sarah Webb collected her first wicket for the club when T. Pitts was caught by Terry Squires for eight runs as Webb finished with 1-14 from one over. Squires returned figures of 2-38 from eight overs (one maiden), while Fogg also claimed two wickets - for just 14 runs - from four overs, two of which were maidens. Thomas, Peters and Ricki Ellis each took one wicket.

The vacancy of the tour party's Patcham headquarters to view part of the Eastbourne Air Show proved not to be the day's only early departure. Peters was run out after facing just nine deliveries to leave Belhus on 4-1, though a 32-run partnership ensued between Fogg and Dale Kenyon. Fogg struck three fours in 24 until he was caught and bowled by Butterworth, while Thomas contributed 16, which included two fine boundaries off the bowling of Price in the nineteenth and twenty-first overs of the Belhus innings. When he was caught by Williams off the bowling of M. Pitts (2-7), this sparked a collapse from 73-4 to 79-9. Last Man Danny Norris struck three fours in a knock of 13 to bring up the three figures for the tourists. After Smith, Lawrence and Shearing had joined M. Pitts in taking two wickets each, Williams held on to his second catch of the afternoon off Butterworth (2-14) to bring the curtain down on a memorable ninth youth tour of Sussex for the Belhus club.

Youth Tour Report - Day Four: Lewes Priory CC

Belhus Youth 126 all out
Lewes Priory Youth 127-3

Gavin Jefferies struck his second half-century of the tour, by remarkable co-incidence finishing on the same score of 59. Jefferies struck seven fours and one six with his first three scoring shots being boundaries. This was arguably the better of his two big tour innings; Lewes Priory were a stronger opposition and batting conditions were adverse due to heavy overnight rain. In fact batting at one end was particularly difficult with the ball sometimes lifting sharply off a length. This accounted for the early dismissal of Bradley Sheridan, promoted to opener, when he was bowled by Longdon without score. Belhus soon found themselves in deeper trouble at 17-4 as Jason Peters was caught for seven runs, Tony Ellis was bowled for one run and Terry Squires was trapped leg before for nought. Thankfully Jefferies rode out the Lewes Priory storm as no other visiting batsman was able to reach double figures. The next highest scorer, apart from extras, was Danny Norris with seven runs until a poor call led to a needless run out dismissal. Harkin and Longdon did the damage for Lewes with 3-18 and 3-5 respectively with Harkin bowling five overs and Longdon just two overs.

After the break, Belhus got their much-needed early breakthrough when Player was caught off the bowling of Squires without score after 2.2 overs to leave Priory at 5-1. But other opener Wade remained untroubled until he was bowled by Michael Fogg for 38. Bowd contributed 30 runs for the home side before retiring, leaving York and Longdon to each finish on nine not out to complete a fine seven-wicket victory for the home team. The most economical bowler of the Belhus attack was Tony Ellis, 0-9 from three overs, while third change bowler Fogg, having a deserved rest from wicketkeeping duties, finished with 1-28, also from three overs.

Earlier in the day, the tour party had relaxed at Patcham Recreation Ground which fronts their Brighton YHA headquarters, by playing kwik cricket. The tour party then travelled to a pizza restaurant for what was supposed to be a light pre-match lunch. However, the playing members could not resist taking advantage of the "eat as much as you like" buffet menu, followed by generous portions of ice cream and pepsi re-fills. Thanks must be recorded to Sandra Summers for negotiating a generous discount with the restaurant manager prior to our arrival; of course our seven wicket defeat later that day was purely co-incidental!

Youth Tour Report - Day Three: Middleton on Sea CC

Middleton on Sea Youth 307-4
Belhus Youth 82 all out

It was exactly 29 years to the day when a Belhus youth team last played at the Middleton on Sea Cricket Club at Sea Lane. This was the furthest journey from our Brighton base, a distance of nearly 30 miles. We departed early for West Sussex as we were staging the tour party's lawn tennis tournament. There were strong rumours that Danny Norris had been receiving regular professional tennis coaching so he was a red hot favourite to win the competition. The draw was organised by Dale Kenyon and even the adults were included. On arrival at Bognor Regis we were directed to some tennis courts right alongside the beach and seafront cafe - a perfect location on a calm morning. Needless to say, the winner of the tennis tournament was - Danny Norris, who defeated Cliff Cansdale in the final. After well deserved refreshments, we made our way to the Middleton on Sea sports club. The facilities were first class and we received a warm welcome. A major surprise on arrival was that we were told that their cricket manager, who later introduced himself, was a former member of Belhus Park Cricket Club in the 1950's! Belhus Park merged with Belhus Association in 1960 to form the club we know today. And so to the match.

Our strong hosts batted first with openers Louis Samuels and Josh Riggall putting on 57 for the first wicket until Samuels was caught behind by Michael Fogg off the bowling of Bradley Sheridan for 15. But Riggall went on to score 48 in an innings which included four fours and three sixes, until he too was caught by the impressive Fogg, this time off the bowling of Danny Norris. The batting onslaught continued as South of England representative player Adam Rawstrone struck eight fours in an unhurried 49 until he was trapped leg before by Terry Squires. Any hopes that a breakthrough had been achieved were shortlived as Middleton's strong middle order pushed on towards their mammoth score, aided by a very short boundary on one side of the ground. Jeremy Green and Henry Burrows both reached their half-centuries, then promptly retired in short succession to allow Dan Macer and Luca Coleman-Carr to have their turn at the crease. Green had struck four fours and one six, while Burrows had struck four fours. Macer was even more agressive, his first four scoring shots were all boundaries as he raced to 32, at which point he was caught by Squires to give Norris his second wicket of the afternoon. At the conclusion of the fortieth over, Coleman-Carr was undefeated on 24 with partner Will Burrows finishing on two not out. Norris completed a fine day in the circumstances by returning 2-51 from five overs. Yes, a tad expensive but understandable on a first-class pitch, fast outfield and very short boundary. Yet Danny will be one of the first to acknowledge the excellent team work of left-arm seam bowler Sheridan and wicketkeeper Fogg, whose ability to put one of the strongest teams in Sussex under pressure was highly commendable. Sheridan finished with 1-23 from his maximum allocation of eight overs, with his fourth over being a maiden. Squires finished with 1-55 from seven overs.

After tea, the Middleton attack were on fire with Burrows picking up 4-23 from five overs to bring about a middle order collapse. His first wicket came when Squires was picked up at first slip for eight runs, Dale Kenyon was bowled without score, Sheridan had scored eleven, including one six, until he went the same way as Squires. To round off his devastating spell, he ended some brave resistance from Connor Thomas, who scored 10. J. Michael, 2-8, finished off the Belhus innings as the visitors were dismissed for 82 after 23.5 overs, with Joe Summers the last Belhus batsman to be dismissed, without scoring. Ricki Ellis was the undefeated Belhus batsman with six runs. Earlier, opening batsman Jason Peters had top scored with 13. Other Belhus wickets were taken by Green 1-9 from two overs, Louis Samuels, 1-7 from four overs, T. Davies 1-6 from four and D. Masson 1-20 from five overs. Although there was difference in ages and strength of the two teams, this did not detract from both teams enjoying the afternoon's play and subsequent post-match presentations.

Youth Tour Report - Day Two: Keymer and Hassocks CC

Belhus Youth 208 all out
Keymer and Hassocks Youth 208 all out

Was this the finest youth cricket match ever played? Belhus had started brightly at Ad Adastra Park, with opener Michael Fogg striking four boundaries in an innings of 26 and Jason Peters hit six fours in his 32. After the loss of Ricki Ellis, bowled by Poole for one run, Gavin Jefferies came in at number four. After surviving a relatively comfortable chance at square-leg before he was off the mark, Gavin went on to strike a fine 59, by hitting eight fours and two sixes. With Connor Thomas adding 30 batting at number six until he was caught by Poole off the bowling of Chad for 30, Dale Kenyon scored 22 at number seven; both Thomas and Kenyon hit four boundaries, Terry Squires took the Belhus score past the 200 mark with 15. For Keymer and Hassocks CC, Poole finished with 5-43 from 7.2 overs, supported by Roberts, 2-27 from four overs.

After tea, home openers Poole and Bracknell were largely untroubled on the excellent, benign surface, as 114 were put on for the first wicket. Poole was eventually caught by Kenyon off the bowling of Terry Squires for 89, while Bracknell was trapped leg before by Ricki Ellis for 34. After number three batsman Chad was bowled by Michael Fogg on 14, eleven year old Tony Ellis almost single handedly destroyed the Keymer and Hassocks middle order with 4-43. Number eight batsman Murray offered some late resistance with 24, to bring the hosts within a few runs of victory. Roberts was run out for six and as the final over of the match, bowled by Ricki Ellis, started, all four results were still possible. Number ten batsman Upton scrambled a single to level the scores, but two balls later last man Banico was caught at mid-on by Terry Squires to secure the tie. Supporting Tony Ellis were Terry Squires, 3-27, Fogg 1-30 and Ricki Ellis, 2-28.

Earlier the day, the Belhus tour party had relaxed at the picturesque Rottingdean pitch and putt course, overlooking the English Channel before staying for lunch. There was no shortage of food; our splendid hosts at Keymer and Hassocks provided, as well as tea, a marvellous post-match barbecue enjoyed by all. This was undoubtedly another memorable day in the club’s history and we all looked forward to day three of the tour and the trip to Middleton on Sea for our tennis tournament and a visit to the Middleton Sports Club.

Youth Tour Report - Day One: Henfield CC and Sussex CCC

Belhus Youth 87-9
Henfield Youth 88-3

Belhus left their North Stifford headquarters after a pre-tour breakfast in less than ideal weather conditions. Driving rain left many in doubt whether the first match of the tour, a lunchtime start at the picturesque ground at Henfield Common, would actually take place. As the tour party of cars and the Ford Community minibus made its Southbound way, the rain relented and play was soon under way as scheduled. The tour openers for Belhus were Dale Kenyon and Danny Norris; enthusiastic cheers rang out from their team mates in the pavilion as the first runs were scored. However, Belhus lost their first wicket of the match when, with the score on nine in the third over, Norris was caught by his Henfield namesake for one run off the bowling of Lees. In the next over, Kenyon was bowled by Harrison for 13 from seven scoring shots, which included the first boundary of the tour, while Lees kept up the home team's wicket-taking momentum by bowling Joe Summers for one run as Belhus faltered to 19 for 3. Terry Squires became the second tour party batsman in double figures with ten runs, but in the quest for quick runs, Sarah Webb, Tony Ellis and Connor Thomas were all run out without score. However, Webb did manage to halt the Belhus middle order collapse as she featured in five partnerships which yielded sixteen runs. That may not have seemed a breathtaking amount, but in the context of the game on a very damp pitch, courtesy of heavy overnight and early morning rain, the contribution from Webb was potentially a signficant one.

After Owen Jefferies had been caught by Culver off the bowling of Plumstead for two runs, Ricki Ellis and Bradley Sheridan finished undefeated on 11 and 23 respectively, undeterred by the golden duck of Michael Fogg, who was caught behind by Knott, again off Plumstead. Fogg's shock first ball dismissal was unfortunate; he played at a farly wide leg-side delivery and the ball grazed the tow of the bat. Sheridan, meanwhile, struck a huge six over mid-off, from the pavilion end, the ball traversing over the boundary fence and was smartly caught by a spectator on the common. For Henfield, Lees finished with 2-25 from four overs, Harrison and Norris both finished with 1-10 and Plumstead took 2-5 from a solitary over.

Henfield opened their innings with Knott and Plumstead facing a keen Belhus attack of Sheridan and Ricki Ellis. Between them in the first five overs, the conceded just five runs as the home side were still 82 runs short of their target. However, Henfield progressed to 34 without loss after ten overs but then lost both openers without addition to the score. Plumstead was run out for eight runs and Knott succumbed to Fogg, trapped leg before for 22. Number three batsman Culver retrieved the situation by crashing a quick-fire 33 which included six boundaries. He then retired, leaving Harrison and Cooper to finish the job with 9 not out and 10 not out respectively. Sheridan finished a three-over spell by conceding just one run, while Ricki Ellis was almost equally mean, ending with 0-4 from two overs. Fogg returned 1-16 from three overs as Henfield reached their target off the final ball of their sixteenth over.

After the post-match presentations, the tourists made their way to the Hove County Ground, headquarters to Sussex County Cricket Club. There, the Belhus squad were entertained to a fine victory by Essex in the Pro40 tournament. The Essex players were fantastic both on and off the pitch; with several stopping to chat to the team after the game. Darren Gough stopped for a post match photograph with our juniors, the resulting photograph being published in both the Thurrock Gazette and the Thurrock Recorder. It was then on to the Brighton Youth Hostel for some well deserved rest and day two with the pitch and putt tournament and a fixture at Keymer and Hassocks CC.

U11a: Tarrant gets 50 while Frost gives Belhus a Chill

BASILDON AND PITSEA U11 132-7
BELHUS U11 45-9

Basildon opening batsman Daniel Tarrant eight boundaries in a fine undefeated half-century at Mopsies Park on Sunday morning. He put on exactly 50 for the first wicket with Adam Frost, until Frost was bowled by Callum Thomas (1-9 from three overs). Tarrant's 50 brought up a voluntary retirement, as well as the three figure mark for the home team. Perry Barnes, batting at number three, also made double figures, reaching 24 until he was run out at the bowler's end by a brilliant direct hit from Tony Ellis, fielding at mid-off. Supporting a wagging Basildon tail was Aron Healey with 11, until he became Owen Jefferies third victim as the Belhus captain finished with 3-12 from three overs. Connor Ramm took his first wicket to finish with 1-9 from one over for the visitors. After the resumption of play, it was Frost and Tarrant who continued to dominate in a fierce onslaught of the visiting batsmen. Frost finished with 3-8 from three overs, while Tarrant took 2-5 from four overs, three of which were maidens. Barnes took 2-6 and Matthew Campbell was a latecomer to the party with 1-10 from three overs. No Belhus batsman made double figures, though Tony Ellis top scored with eight runs.

After the break, Bradley Mason struck three boundaries in an innings of 20 until he was bowled by Thomas, and in a tense finish with the Belhus "A" team requiring three runs to win from the final four deliveries, Ryan Wells hit the winning runs from a pull shot to the backward square leg boundary. Wells had earlier struck two other fours and ended the match on 17 not out.

He was supported by Gavin Jefferies, 17, and Clarke Wren, 24. Thomas struck six fours, while Wren hit one maximum and two other boundaries in his innings of 33 balls in 45 minutes at the crease. After the break, a sensational spell of medium pace bowling from Ben Palmer, who still qualifies for the U13 team, yielded four wickets at a personal cost of just eleven runs from the maximum allowed four-over spell (one wicket maiden). He had opening batsman Andrew Impey caught on the square leg boundary by Danny Norris for 10, then promptly clean bowled batsmen numbered two, three and four, being Adam Vyse, Craig Bolard and George Simmonett for 12, 5 and 2 respectively. U11B: Boundaries galore in sun at Blackshots

Orsett U11B 295-3
Belhus U11B 264-4

Both Belhus and Orsett were able to field two U11 teams on Sunday, as this second encounter at Blackshots on Sunday morning (2nd July 2006) proved. Orsett’s George Gibbon struck an excellent undefeated 26 with all but two singles coming in boundaries. Gibbon, batting with Lewis Moore, put on a net score of 27 for the first four-over pairing, despite two early wickets falling. Moore was bowled by Sam Hall’s fifth delivery of the morning and was later the victim of an excellent catch by Belhus wicket-keeper Ewan Day off the bowling of Lewis Barrett. Although finishing with a net score of minus two, Moore did reach the boundary on three occasions. When the second Orsett pair came to the crease, Kane Lynn-Jones struck five fours, but after the first three boundaries was run out thanks to a good throw from Hall, very close to the boundary, which Day gathered cleanly to break the wicket. There followed three undefeated knocks from George Smith, Jack Shiner and Darragh Mackin with 8, 10 and one run respectively. For Belhus, Hall finished with 1-18 from two overs and Barrett 1-34 from three. After a short break between innings and re-hydration in very humid conditions, Lynn-Jones, 1-12 from three overs including one maiden, dismissed Barrett thanks to a fine full length diving catch by wicketkeeper Gibbon. Three further wickets followed, picked up by Jack Shiner, 1-12 from three overs, Darragh Mackin 1-15 from two overs, while Gibbon later relinquished the gloves to finish with 1-14 from three (one maiden). For Belhus, Hall and Harry Turner were the joint top scorers, both undefeated on five runs.

EABC: Winter praised for halting Downside School Batting Carnage

Downside School U14A 213-7 dec
Essex Association of Boys Clubs U14 79 all out

A handful of junior cricketers from Thurrock were provided with the opportunity of making the journey to the Downside Abbey school at Stratton on the Fosse, twelve miles south of Bath, for the Essex Boys Clubs annual U14 trip to the famous West Country venue. In magnificent surroundings at the foot of the Mendip Hills, Billy Winter of Belhus Cricket Club performed admirably with the ball to take two wickets at a cost of just 27 runs while his bowling colleagues suffered at the hands of the hard-hitting home batsmen. Essex Team Manager Keith Cramner said “In the context of this game, where we met a very strong Downside team, the bowling performance of Billy Winter was excellent. We had to work hard to contain the home side as much as possible. Despite the result, it was a very enjoyable day and for next year the School have invited us stay overnight for a second fixture the following day”. Laurie Hawkes, also from the Belhus squad of players, joined Billy for the trip to Downside.

U15s Victory over Basildon - with Nelson!

Belhus U15 111-6
Basildon & Pitsea U15 103-7

Gavin Jefferies emerged as the Belhus star all-rounder with both bat and ball in this latest South Essex League U15 match at North Stifford on Wednesday evening (21st June). Jefferies made it a perfect mid-Summers evening by scoring 22 runs as opening batsman to set his team on the way to a score of Nelson - 111, and then followed that up with bowling figures of 3-26 from his alloted four-over spell. After fellow opening batsman Michael Fogg was bowled by Stuart Thorn for just two runs with the Belhus score on 14, Jefferies struck three boundaries until he was second man out, stumped at the wicket off the bowling of Anthony Burridge, but by this time he had put on 40 for the second wicket with Bradley Sheridan, who went on to score 23. Both Sheridan and his skipper, Clarke Wren, were caught and bowled by Ben Munday, for 23 and 16 respectively. Danny Norris chipped in with a cavalier 12 runs from only seven deliveries, crashing three boundaries off consecutive deliveries in a vital contribution, given the margin of eventual victory. Connor Thomas and Harjinder Athwal were the undefeated home batsmen at the close of the 20-over innings with four and five runs each. Doing their best to keep a lid on Belhus were Munday, 2-17, Thorn 1-11, Burridge 1-16 and Dean Parkinson 1-17. After the break, Basildon and Pitsea opener Luke Parkinson struck a fine undefeated 37 from just 44 deliveries and he was supported by fellow opener Thorn with 16. However, a middle order collapse ensued as Phil Tooke was comfortably caught from a lofted off-drive, a well timed hard drive, but straight into the waiting hands of the Belhus captain for a duck, Sean Healey and Munday were both run out while Santry, 9 runs, provided Wren's second catch of the evening, this one off his own bowling. Daniel Vanderputt scored a dozen before being caught behind off the ever-impressive Fogg to produce one of Jefferies' three wickets, while Peter Robinson was undefeated with 14 at the close. Supporting Jefferies with the Belhus bowling were Sheridan with 1-23 and and Wren, 1-13, both from four overs. The economy rate of Ricki Ellis was also something to write home about, costing only 17 runs from four overs, one of which was the vital last over of match-winning containment.

Under 11's are 11 runs short at Hadleigh

Hadleigh and Thundersley U11 244-2
Belhus U11 233-5

Hadleigh and Thundersley emerged as 11-run victors in this close finish at the John Burrows Ground at Hadleigh on Sunday morning. Hadleigh, batting first, built up some solid resistance against a Belhus attack. The home side lost only two wickets in this eight a side South Essex League match, as Mitchell Arthur took 1-4 from two overs, while cover fielder Tom Wood teamed up with wicketkeeper Sam Hall to produce a run-out. After the break, Ryan Wells with an undefeated 10 and Owen Jefferies with nine were the mainstays as their team were just unable to reach the 245 required for victory. Belhus Team: Owen Jefferies (capt), Mitchell Arthur, Sam Hall, Harry Levy, Bradley Mason, Connor Thomas, Ryan Wells and Tom Woods.

Rebecca leads Belhus to victory

Hadleigh & Thundersley U11B 235-5
Belhus U11B 255-2

Rebecca Holyoak captained the new Belhus team to a fine 20-run victory over their Hadleigh counterparts on Sunday morning. Playing on the second pitch at the John Burrows ground only a short distance from where the two other under-eleven teams were playing from the same clubs, Hadleigh reached a testing 235 from a starting point of 200 in this eight a side pairs fixture. With batsmen losing eight runs for each dismissal in a four-over stay at the crease, Oliver Duxbury, Tom Cerson, Chris Tong and Callum Jenkinson emerged with a credit balance to their personal score with 4,3,6 and 4 respectively. For Belhus, the bowlers amongst the wickets were Craig Vickers, 1-10 from two overs, Daniel Rowan 1-8 from four overs including one maiden, Harry Turner 1-7 from two overs and Mason Ruck 1-12 also from two. Fine catches were taken by Rowan at mid-off and Ruck at mid-wicket, while Belhus wicketkeeper Ewan Day put in a good display behind the stumps. After the break, the first four Belhus batsmen were undefeated with seven year old Jamie Willett completely untroubled by the opening home attack. He finished with two runs while colleague Turner scored four runs. The second pairing of Day and Rowan laid the foundation for victory, no runs were scored off the bat but, crucially, no wickets were lost and the momentum was maintained. The third pairing of Rebecca Holyoak and Ashleigh Hall produced more activity for the scorers; Holyoak was caught and bowled first ball but recovered to score ten runs to emerge with a net credit score of two runs, while Hall was also dismissed once but also reached the boundary with a well-timed on-drive. The grand finale came for Belhus with a magnificent display from Vickers, to complete a fine all-round performance. The left-hander struck three boundaries to finish undefeated on 12 runs, while colleague Ruck played a good supporting role with 1 not out. Teams: Hadleigh and Thundersley: Cameron Heath, Oliver Duxbury, Ishan Patel, Tom Cerson, Chris Tong, Callum Jenkinson, Miles Graham and Miles Harvey. Belhus: Jamie Willett, Harry Turner, Ewan Day, Daniel Rowan, Rebecca Holyoak, Ashleigh Hall, Mason Ruck and Craig Vickers.

Belhus U11 Spidermen 140-2 dec
Belhus U11 Archers 87 all out

Belhus U15s fail at home to Horndon

HORNDON ON THE HILL U15 122-3
BELHUS U15 54 all out

Belhus crashed at home to Horndon on the Hill in the U15 west division of the South Essex District Cricket Board League at North Stifford on Wednesday (8th June 2006). Horndon made good early progress with Osborne, Hooper and Joyce all undefeated on 35, 37 and 26 respectively. Belhus knew they had to score at around six runs an over, though arguably it was not beyond them, as an excellent batting track had been provided and the outfield was fast. The Belhus openers initially ran between the wickets well, taking every opportunity to keep the scoreboard ticking. However, it appeared that several of the Belhus players went for the big shots, rather than working the ball around the ground depending on the type of delivery received, as Belhus faltered badly, but no one could fault their brave attempt to score quick runs to reach their target. The Horndon fielding was supreme; by the time the second of two run outs had been executed from the covers, the writing was firmly on the wall and the league points were heading East. Bradley Sheridan top scored for Belhus with 15, in the face of bowling from Plom, 3-3 from three overs including one maiden, Dennis, 2-12 from four overs and Joyce, 2-10 from 1.4 overs.

EABC Falter at Felsted

Felsted School U14 197-8
Essex Association of Boys Clubs U14 117-7

A very strong Felsted School U14 team defeated the representative team from the Essex Association of Boys Clubs by 80 runs on Tuesday afternoon (8th June 2006). Felsted were able to score at a rate of fractionally over seven runs per over despite the best efforts of Richard Underwood from Billericay CC who took 4-22 from five overs. Billy Winter of Belhus CC took 2-33 from four overs while Omah Ahmed of Frenford Boys Club returned figures of 2-23 from two overs. After tea, Lee Cramner of Ingatestone Boys Club struck a fine 31 which included five fours and was involved in a 59 run partnership with Ben Palmer of Belhus CC. Palmer opened the batting and scored six runs though was able to hold an end up for 16 overs just as his manager directed, Cramner was also supported well by Karl Scammel of Frenford with an undefeated 23 (two boundaries) while Ahmed also reached the boundary twice in an unbeaten innings of 15. Keith Cramner, the Essex representative side's manager said: We played on the school's main ground and put up a creditable performance against a very strong side. The boys can be pleased with this achievement at Felsted". Tom Worsfold and Laurie Hawkes from Belhus Cricket Club, joined their club colleagues Palmer and Winter in this fixture.

Belhus U13s in last over Thriller with Benfleet

BELHUS U13 95-4
BENFLEET U13 97-4

Benfleet edged past the Belhus total in the final over with just five deliveries remaining in this thrilling match at North Stiford on Sunday morning (4th June 2006). Billy Winter had set the scene with an undefeated 25, which included one six and four other boundaries, while Connor Day was in good support with 10. For Benfleet, Bayly, Akerman and Hudson returned figures of 1-16, 1-7 and 1-1 respectively. After the break and the consumption of a fair quantity of bacon sandwiches washed down by copious amounts of tea and coffee, which is becoming a hallmark of Sunday morning youth cricket on the village green, Benfleet openers Zammitt and Masson scored 21 and 20, while Winter completed a fine all-round performance by claiming 3-9 from four overs, including two maidens to set up a thrilling finish to the match. Sunilraj Sangha gave valuable support with the ball, returning 1-13 from three overs.

Owen Jefferies top scores for U11s at Benfleet

BENFLEET U11 258-0
BELHUS U11 238-3

The home side's George Verlander returned 2-10 from three overs, while sister Hannah took 1-12 also from three. Josh Brady claimed 1-8, also from three. U15s in 24-run victory over Stanford

BELHUS U15 94-4
STANFORD LE HOPE U15 70 all out

Belhus U15s followed up their narrow victory over Orsett with a more comfortable victory at Stanford Recreation Ground in the South Essex Youth League. Jack Thomas 24, and Billy Winter were the main contributors for the visitors to set Stanford a tough target. Unfortunately for the home side, left arm seamer Bradley Sheridan generated substantial pace and accuracy as he generated some sideways movement off the pitch to finish with three wickets for just seven runs from four overs, one of which was a maiden. For Stanford, Cross made 11 in difficult circumstances as the Belhus fielding was of the highest order. Billy Winter held on to a low chance at first slip which gave Laurie Hawkes, his U13 team colleague, his first wicket at this level. Hawkes himself also took a fine catch at square leg, diving backwards, to dismiss Stanford's Iain Sanderson.

U15s Victorious over Orsett

BELHUS U15 82-4
ORSETT U15 80 all out

Belhus emerged victorious over their near-neighbours Orsett by just two runs in a thrilling finish at North Stifford in the South Essex Youth League on Bank Holiday Monday (29th May 2006). Belhus had wiped out the top and middle Orsett batting order through Bradley Sheridan, Gavin Jefferies and Harjinder Athwal. Sheridan took 3-11 from four overs, Jefferies ended his spell with 2-8 from 3.3 overs while the spin bowling of Athwal 2-2 from two overs, including one maiden, pegged Orsett back significantly. However, late order batsman Laws had other ideas and had reached 29 by the end of the nineteenth over, with Orsett requiring just three runs to win from the final over, but by this time Laws had only the Orsett number eleven batsman for company in the middle. As Laws struck the ball to the cover boundary, an adventurous and fatal second run was attempted; the return throw was excellent with the home side overjoyed that the wicket was broken with the Orsett last man still a few yards short of the crease. Laws, like Jefferies earlier in the match, finished undefeated on 30 not out. The Belhus team was superbly supported by Connor Day and Ben Palmer from the Belhus U13 squad. Day, making his U15 team debut, took one wicket while Palmer contributed with a fine catch at cover and was also responsible for the return throw from the deep to end the Orsett innings. Earlier, Jefferies was a solid mainstay of the Belhus innings with an undefeated 30, after Glen Harris had made early inroads for Orsett, finishing with 2-8 from 4 overs.

Andrew Downey is a big hit

CANVEY ISLAND U13 96-9
BELHUS U13 68-1

Canvey's Andrew Downey struck a rapid undefeated 43 from just 20 deliveries to put the islanders in the driving seat towards a 28-run victory at Smallgains Park on Sunday morning (28th May 2006). Downey's innings included one six and eight fours in this South Essex Youth League fixture. However, most of Downey's colleagues were not as successful at the crease, with only Jamie Casson offering support with an undefeated 25. For the visitors, Connor Day was very impressive, claiming 3-14 from four overs, two of which were maidens. Ben Palmer took 2-4 from three overs, while Billy Winter, Amy Squires and Jacob Ward returned figures of 1-9, 1-8 and 1-3 respectively. Jack Day was very impressive behind the stumps and made good ground to take a catch off the bowling of Squires. The Belhus fielding continues to improve; exemplified by a one handed collection by Squires from a fierce pull shot at backward square leg and a forward diving catch at short third man by Chris Sharp. Belhus would like to thank the Canvey club for their extraordinary efforts to get the game played, with club members on the ground from 7.30am assisting with the drying of the surface.

Hall of Fame

EABC in Thrilling Tie at Forest School

FOREST SCHOOL U14 67 all out
ESSEX ASSOCIATION OF BOYS CLUBS U14 67-9

This 30-overs per side fixture ended in an enthralling tie at Forest School on Wednesday (24th May 2006). The host school had slumped to a perilous 9 runs for the loss of four wickets before a recovery from the middle and late order rallied the score to 67 until the final wicket was taken in the 25th over. By contrast, the Essex Association of Boys Clubs started brightly and had reached 49 for 1 until a major collapse ensued, resulting in a levelling of the scores. Belhus players on representation duty for the EABC on this occasion were Laurie Hawkes and Tom Worsfold, plus a deserved promotion for Billy Winter from the EABC U12 squad.

Valiant Effort by Vigors in 13-run Cup Defeat

HADLEIGH & THUNDERSLEY U15 109-3
BELHUS U15 96-4

A magnificent effort from Richard Vigors who made an undefeated 47 was not enough as Belhus narrowly failed to overcome Hadleigh and Thundersley in the second round of the Essex Peters Cup at North Stifford on Tuesday evening (23rd May 2006). Vigors was supported by Clarke Wren who made 20. The visitors had earlier reached the daunting three figure mark in this 20-overs per side fixture through Robbins and Gibbons who scored 37 and 23 respectively, while, for Belhus, Gavin Jefferies was the pick of the Belhus bowlers with 2-22. Nevertheless, this was a very good performance from the home side against a club who have been producing exceptionally strong squads over the years. In the first round of the cup, Hadleigh had defeated Horndon on the Hill while Belhus received a bye.

Billy Jai Spears U13s to League Victory

BASILDON & PITSEA U13 35-6
BELHUS U13 36-6

This was one of the finest, meanest bowling performances ever produced by a Belhus U13 team as they overcame Basildon and Pitsea by four wickets in this South Essex League clash on Sunday morning. In far from ideal batting conditions, this was always going to be a match dominated by bowlers and the home attack certainly took full advantage. Connor Day bagged 2-3 from four overs in a spell which included two maidens, while there were two exceptionally mean spells from Jai Chopra and Billy Winter. Chopra took a wicket from three maidens; Winter also took a wicket from two maidens. Providing good support were Connor Ramsey 1-2 and Sunilraj Sangha 1-3. After the break, Laurie Hawkes saw Belhus home with a fine undefeated 19.

Campbell puts Belhus U11s in the Soup

BASILDON & PITSEA U11 264-3
BELHUS U11 145-11

Martin Campbell of Basildon and Pitsea CC, will never forget this match at Mopsies Park, Basildon on Sunday morning (21st May 2006) - coming on as sixth change bowler, he took a hat-trick with his first three deliveries and finished with figures of five wickets for just two runs fom two overs in this eight a side pairs fixture in the South Essex League. Earlier, Tony Ellis and Owen Jefferies had taken 2-10 and 1-15 respectively for the visitors. After the break between innings, a relatively inexperienced Belhus team lost eleven wickets, which resulted in an 88-run deduction from their starting point of 200 runs under pairs cricket rules.

Dropped Catches cost EABC U14s dear

UPPINGHAM SCHOOL U14 1st XI 172-7
ESSEX ASSOCIATION OF BOYS CLUBS U14 124-6

Like the full England team before them, the Essex Association of Boys Clubs were left to rue some dropped catches which ultimately cost them dear on the main ground at Uppingham School. The host school's opening batsman Sebastian Foster was very fortunate not to have been dismissed from the day's first delivery when a good chance went begging at Gully. Foster later survived due to another spillage later in his innings at wide mid-on and, by his team-mates own admission, began to lead a charmed life as a mis-timed cover drive spooned its way narrowly over the outstretched arm of the Essex extra cover fieldsman. By then, the visiting fielding was beginning to show signs of tiredness as Foster firmly entrenched himself as the mainstay of the home innings, until his wicket was re-arranged by fifth change medium pacer Ben Palmer from Belhus CC, who finished with 1-8 from two overs. Supporting Foster with the bat was Chalk, with 35 not out. Ajay from Frenford Boys Club was the top visiting bowler, whose off-spin earned 2-28 from four overs. Tom Worsfold of Belhus CC was in excellent form as wicketkeeper. After tea, Essex openers Ajay and Palmer laid the foundations of a sound reply with 20 and 21 respectively, but the team remained firmly behind the required run-rate and fell to a 48-run defeat in this 35 overs per side fixture.

Another 50 for Billy Winter

UPPINGHAM SCHOOL U14 4th XI 112-9
ESSEX ASSOCIATION OF BOYS CLUBS U12 113-7

Billy Winter of Belhus Cricket Club struck his second consecutive half-century for the County boys' representative squad with a fine knock of 54 which included five boundaries at Uppingham, Rutland, on Tuesday afternoon (16th May 2006). Supporting Winter was Tahmoor Nawaz from the Frenford Boys Club with 15. Earlier, opening bowler Connor Day, also from Belhus CC, took a wicket with his second delivery and finished with a creditable 2-10 from 4 overs, however the outstanding performance with the ball was from the devastating off-spin of Umair Malik (Frenford) who returned the astonishing figures of 6-17 from six fine overs.

Amy and Chris are too Sharp for Weald

SOUTH WEALD U13 64-8
BELHUS U13 70-4

Laurie Hawkes and Sunilraj Sangha, both undefeated on 14, were the joint top scorers for Belhus in this non-competitive fixture at North Stifford. The South Weald innings was off to the worst possible start when one of the opening batsman was run out off the very first ball of the match by Amy Squires, fielding at third man. Amy went on to achieve a further run out later in the visitors' innings, to seal a fine performance in the field. Home team bowling accolades went to Chris Sharp, 2-4 from two overs, with Hawkes showing
