Belhus Cricket Club News Flash
Midweek Tour Fixture
Peter Sims today confirmed the date of this years visit to us.
Once again Belhus are the first fixture on the LCC tour.
Last year I recall some very 'nice boys' dressed in their pink tour attire.
As this is the first day of the tour, rather than meet at a local pub, Peter has asked
if the club could be used as the meeting point, in the same way as last year.
Last year to remind us we put on a finger buffet and the lads enjoyed a few beers and some
pre tour ceremonies to set us all up for a good day.
The date is Tuesday 2nd September 2008 start 13.30.
This is a recipricol fixture as Lowestoft had to put up with us earlier this month.
Belhus Veterans in Cup Final - Tuesday 8th July at North Stifford 6pm start
Following their recent 27-run victory over Horndon on the Hill in the semi-final, Belhus Veterans now face Pegasus and Corringham Veterans in the final of the knock-out competition. The fixture will take place on Tuesday evening, 8th July at North Stifford, 6pm start and all the usual refreshment facilities will be available to members and guests.

Games off, add Bank Holiday Monday game
Early season weather has put paid to three out of six fixtures.
The good news is that although todays match at Abridge is lost, we will now play them on Monday May 26th at North Stifford at 14.00 hours.
It comes just 24 hours after the prestigeous club hosting of the Essex and Hampshire Ladies U/11 teams at North Stifford, so put these two dates in your diary.
Extra Fixture
With availability good early season, I have arranged an extra fixture (4th X1) at South Loughton for a mixed X1 on Saturday 12th April 2008, this is providing the weather is on our side.
This game will fit in nicely as our 2nd X1 are due to entertain a Sidcup X1, so we can mix the teams up to ensure the batters get a bat and bowlers get a bowl.
SO PLEASE MAKE YOUR AVAILABILITY KNOWN EARLY.
This will help our selection committee at the time of picking teams.
BOWLING MACHINE HIRE (YOUTH CRICKET)
As from Saturday April 12th, anyone from 15years of age and under, will be able to hire the Bowling Machine and make use of the new Net facility with one of our Qualified Coaches. Sessions will last for 30minutes each from 9.30AM to 11.30AM broken down into 4 different hire sessions. Each 30minute session will cost £5 per session. Bookings can ONLY be made in the North Stifford Clubhouse Bar (There is a booking Diary there) and the fee must be paid when booking is made. This will be done on a first come, first served basis.
NETS AT LAST
After several years of planning, a double lane cricket net was installed at North Stifford in late February 2008.
Hon. Treasurer Jim Robertson, who led the project, said "It is fantastic to deliver this project after a lot of hard work and effort over many, many months. I would like to add my sincere thanks to all the funding organisations that backed our club and made the delivery of these nets come to fruition. I now look forward to seeing the nets in use this year and in many years to come. This will be a great asset to all our coaches and young cricketers, both now and in the future. I would also like to thank Bingham Ground Services who installed the nets so quickly and efficiently.
All at Belhus Cricket Club would like to thank the following organisations that made this project possible:-
- Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation
- Veolia ES Cleanaway Mardyke Trust
- The Jack Petchey Foundation
- The Lords Taverners
- Essex County Cricket Club Youth Trust
- The Variety Club of Great Britain
u12`s just miss final
The final of the South Essex indoor league will be played by Horndon who finished top on 22 points against orsett who finished second on 18 points.Belhus also had 18 points but although we beat orsett quite comfortably in our match they qualified for the final due to a better wicket average than us .
We also missed out on batting bonus points due to the fact we restricted orsett b to 39 runs then only needed 40 to win and got them in only 5 overs .
So although we can feel very unlucky not to be in the final the boys should be very proud of the way they played and represented Belhus in this tournament .
Good luck to both teams in the final .

Six weekend victories for Belhus teams
The weekend of 2nd/3rd June 2007 was a very successful one for Belhus. On Saturday there were victories for the club's first three elevens in their respective divisions of the Lord's International League. Only the fourth eleven lost, in their non-competitive match at Chipstead in Kent. Meanwhile the following day, the Belhus U13 team kept the momentum going with a slender two-run defeat of Canvey Island. To round off a successful weekend, there were senior victories in the Essex Sunday League away at Benfleet, while the second team saw Paul Whitlock score a maiden century in a win at Mountnessing.
UPDATED Monday 28th May: Late May Bank Holiday Programme hit by Rain
Belhus cricket matches have again been hit by the weather. On Saturday 26th May, rain forced the abandonment of the club's fourth eleven fixture in division two of the Readers South Thames League with Streatham and Marlborough at Dulwich Common with Belhus well placed at 60 for the loss of one wicket....meanwhile all four Sunday fixtures were washed out without a ball being bowled, including the Essex Invitation Sunday League fixture with Orsett, the Sunday second eleven game away at Old Chelmsfordians, as well as the two fixtures at U11 and U13 level with Rayleigh Fairview.
UPDATE at 11am Monday 28th May: The U16 Matchplay game at Billericay has been cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch. The first eleven league cup game with Havering atte Bower still goes ahead; if no play is possible then a bowl-out is obligatory.
UPDATE at 4pm on Monday 28th May: A bowl out was held in the league cup game with Havering atte Bower, who won by 2 hits to 1.
Belhus top of League Fairplay Table
The Lord's International Essex Cricket League have announced that Belhus are top of the current fair play table for the 2007 season, as at 19th May 2007. Belhus currently head the table of 18 clubs.
Belhus win bowl-off
Belhus won their first round cup game against Fords when no play was possible due to heavy rain. A bowl-off was ordered under the cup rules with each side electing 7 bowlers to bowl at one stump! In rather unpleasant conditions of heavy winds and rain, neither side managed to hit the stump in the regulation 7 bowlers turns,it then went to "sudden-death" which Belhus managed to win when Roy the cat heffernan managed to hit the stump! Belhus to play winners of Havering/Hawks in quarter final on may 28th
Belhus are U16 SEDCB Indoor Champions
The Belhus CC Under 16 indoor six a side cricket squad became champions of the South Essex District Cricket Board event when they defeated Horndon on the Hill by ten runs in the play-off final at Grays School on Friday evening (30th March 2007). Match report to follow on this website as soon as possible.
This has been a throughly successful Winter indoor campaign, with both the U14 and U16 teams winning their South Board competitions, while two U13 teams shared the Essex Association of Boys' Clubs indoor trophy when they tied their final match.

(11/12/06) East Hanningfield CC will host our 1st X1 on Saturday 01/09/07 at 1.30pm, the fabulous village ground and teas easily match our own standards, its a great place for the 1st X1 to play after the slog of League Cricket.
Abridge CC tonight (10/12/06) confirmed the away fixture for Sunday 22/04/07 at 1.30pm
Waggoners CC (Kent) are a wandering side, they have double booked us on Sunday 09/09/07.
The good news is we will play them at the HSBC ground in Beckenham on Sunday 08/07/07.
Cliff advises the club played an early season fixture at this ground in the 80's, so I am sure some of our members, will have good memories from those times.
Belhus Sat 4th XI elected to Readers South Thames Cricket League for 2007
Belhus Cricket Club were unanimously elected as members of the Readers South Thames Cricket League at the competition's annual general meeting held at Sidcup CC on 4th December (2006). The club will be entering its Saturday fourth eleven into the second of the two-division league, which caters for teams of third, fourth and fifth eleven standard. After the meeting, there were handshakes all-round as many of the club delegates welcomed us on board. Representing Belhus CC at the meeting were Fred Taylor (Hon. Fixture Secretary) and Cliff Cansdale (Saturday 4th XI Captain). Both were questioned at some length by the meeting, prior to the vote being taken. Questions fielded included: "Why do you want to come to Kent to play - what is wrong with Essex?", "Will you be a genuine fourth eleven and how many juniors will you play?", and "Will your team have sufficient transport?". A pledge was given the entered team would be a genuine fourth eleven with a number of juniors present. An explanation was also given that we had no league options available to us in Essex as the Mid-Essex League had recently introduced a rule where new applicants needed to have their ground within ten miles of the County Ground at Chelmsford. We advised that it was important for us to play in a league as this would ensure a regular fixture list where our young players could develop by playing alongside more senior players.
Belhus play each of their opponents twice, home and away. Our opponents will include clubs such as Belvedere, Bexley, Bromley, Bromley Common, Dulwich and Old Colfeians.
2007 Fixtures, updated 5th Dec Sunday League Fixtures...
Fred Taylor, our hard-working fixture secretary, is producing a fine fixture list for all the Belhus adult teams; these are now being shown on the "Results and Fixtures" section of this website. Simply follow the links to view. Although the league fixtures have yet to be received and the cup draws yet to be made, Fred has put his wealth of experience and good contacts into play for an excellent fixture programme, whether for the first or fourth elevens.
The work though is still not complete; the fixture lists will be updated as further matches are confirmed.
Sunday League Fixtures on line.
Belhus CC Granted Planning Permission for Permanent Outdoor Nets
Belhus Cricket Club is pleased to announce that it has received planning permission from Thurrock Council to erect permanent outdoor cricket nets at the North Stifford ground. Our plans were submitted earlier this year by Jim Robertson, who said: "'It's great news for the club and for this area of the borough. It is still early days in terms of the facility actually being put in place, but it is a big stepping stone towards this long term dream becoming a reality. These nets, if and when installed, should be the best in the area by far". The next stage is for funding to be secured. Jim continued: "We priced the job some eighteen months ago, and we were looking at the net structure and surfaces being in the region of £15,000 with the security fencing being another £6,000". The club is already earmarking certain external funding towards the project and additional funding partners will now be required to help make the much needed community facility into a reality. Belhus youth chairman Cliff Cansdale admitted: "With so few facilities available to hire locally, we are asking parents to take their children to places like Ilford and Chelmsford for coaching, or even to school halls outside the local area. To have such a facility in our own backyard will benefit not only the club as a whole, but equip individual players with the skills they need to compete adequately with well-coached players from outside the area. I am certain the benefits, especially in terms of the development of the large number of local children interested in cricket, will be enormous".
BELHUS ARE PROMOTED
Belhus Cricket Club have clinched promotion to the premier division of the Lord's International Cricket League. Richard Waters, in his second year as captain of the Saturday first eleven, confidently led his team to fourteen victories out of eighteen league games in division one, with just two defeats and two weather abandonments. Belhus clinched the second promotion place after amassing 386 league points, just 27 points behind Hornchurch Athletic CC. Meanwhile, it has been announced that Belhus wicketkeeper-batsman Colin Adams topped the league's batting average with 96.5 from eight innings. He was undefeated six times and had a highest score of 47 not out.
Seconds in Bank Holiday Cup Fixture
Belhus second eleven travel to Noak Hill CC on Bank Holiday Monday (29th May 2006) for a Lord's International League cup fixture. The Belhus team will be captained by Peter Clark and the action starts at 1pm.
League Representative Honours
We are pleased to announce that Richard Day and Martin Guilbert have been selected to represent the Lord's International League in their CCC inter-league fixture with divisions 2 and 3 of the Surrey Championship on Wednesday 24th May 2006.
Shepherd Neame Twenty-20 Fixture
The much awaited Shepherd Neame Twenty-20 fixture with Grays and Chadwell CC will take place at North Stifford on Thursday 1st June, 6pm start.
Youth Team Management Resolved
Following two highly successful and well-attended parents evenings for the U11 and U13 youth teams, it has been resolved that the U13 team will be managed by Richard Day (01708 859597) and Mark Winter. The U11 team will be managed by Gavin Jefferies (01375 371045). Gavin is currently a member of the Belhus U15 squad and the club are delighted that Gavin has volunteered to manage the team. Gavin, who is studying for a GCSE in physical education and a sports leadership course, becomes the youngest ever team manager at Belhus CC and will be well supported by senior club members during the season. In addition, several parents have come forward to offer supporting roles: Janet Jefferies has offered to assist with the production of the well-renowned bacon sandwich supply at the clubhouse for home U11 fixtures, Jeremy Mason has offered to be kit manager for the team initially, before looking to take a coaching course to assist the juniors with their cricket skills. With other assistance provided by Carol & Brian Edwards and Barry Ruck, the youth section appears to be in good shape to cope with the ever-growing number of children who are looking to enjoy their Cricket during the Summer.
Praise for Belhus Volunteers
Volunteers from Belhus Cricket Club have been praised for assisting with a Thurrock Primary School's girls kwik cricket tournament which was staged by Thurrock Council's Sport and Leisure Department in association with William Edwards Sports College on Tuesday (2nd May 2006). Volunteers from Belhus CC were U15 team members Michael Fogg, Gavin Jefferies and Bradley Sheridan with Lisa Cansdale acting as scorer. The event was on by Stifford Clays Junior School, who now go on to represent Thurrock in the Essex Youth Games, to be held at Garons Leisure Park in Southend on Saturday 17th June (2006). Both Nicole Napier, sports and leisure officer from Thurrock Council and Cliff Cansdale, hon. youth chairman of Belhus CC have expressed their thanks for the volunteers for giving up their spare time to assist. "Bradley, Gavin and Michael are a credit to their parents and their school for their tremendous support they have given. Thurrock Council will be providing evidence of their community involvement for use towards their assessment for the GCSE in Physical Education", said Cliff Cansdale.
'Clubnight' 2006
The club have announced that 'Clubnight' will commence, for seniors, from Wednesday 3rd May 2006 at 6.30pm and every Wednesday thereafter until at least July. Junior clubnight is being held on a Friday evenings, except for U15 squad members. (For further information on junior clubnight, please see the youth section of this website.) The club has decided that, for 2006, there will be no fees payable by members at clubnight.

In 2006, we have been drawn at home to our near-neighbours Grays and Chadwell. The exact date of the fixture has yet to be confirmed, but as soon as it is arranged, the date will be announced on the website. We are almost certain to provide our full range of refreshments for this fixture, with a possibility of a barbeque. More details will be published in due course.

Belhus Achieve ClubMark accreditation

Following months of preparation and training, we learned on 6th June 2005 that we have been awarded with the England and Wales Cricket Board's "ClubMark" accreditation, which shows the club to be a "safe and effective, child-friendly club". David Leighton, National Manager for Cricket Clubs from the England and Wales Cricket Board said: "I congratulate Belhus Cricket Club on being one of a selected number of cricket clubs across England and Wales to achieve ClubMark accreditation. The principles behind achieving accreditation are important, and ensure that your club are now in a position to continue developing and delivering high quality community cricket to the current and future members of your club and specifically to young cricketers. The hard work your club has put in has been recognised by the England and Wales Cricket Board, your County Cricket Board, Sport England, and by partners locally. However, the hard work does not stop here. It is now the responsibility of all club members to uphold and continue the best practice you have put in place as part of the ClubMark process, and continue to thrive as a community cricket club. On behalf of the England and Wales Cricket Board, I would like to congratulate and thank you all once more for your commitment and dedication to community club cricket".
Councillor's Praise for Belhus CC
Thurrock Councillor Tunde Ojetola, who represents the Chafford Hundred ward on Thurrock Council, has praised Belhus Cricket Club for its involvement with the Chafford Community Day, which was held in mid-Summer at the Chafford Campus. The club staged a kwik cricket event which involved junior club members with an emphasis on girl's cricket, with the appearance of trialists for the Thurrock U11 girls cricket team who were taking part in the Essex Youth Games the following weekend under the direction of Lisa Cansdale, herself a member of Belhus Cricket Club. Mr. Ojetola, speaking recently, said: " I want to thank Belhus Cricket Club and its members for the time and dedication you showed at our community day. I thank you all for the contribution in making the day a great success. I further hope that the young children and adults who attended learn more about what the club clearly has to offer to enable them to particpate in the great game. Your club represents a tremendous opportunity for local children to get involved and develop their own talents and, who knows, one day, we may find our local children being called upon to represent their Country".
Hospitality Praised
Belhus Cricket Club has received some excellent feedback after the club staged the South Board U11 Cup Final at its main ground at North Stifford on Sunday morning (4th September). The ground was specifically tailored by Belhus members to suit the needs of the U11 players by creating a quality 20-yard turf pitch, complete with a fully roped 40-yard boundary and regulation 21-inch stumps. The club received an email from John Wade of the Essex Cricket Board which read: "I just wanted to formally pass on my thanks to Belhus Cricket Club for their marvellous hospitality last Sunday. One of the main objectives of these finals is to make them memorable for the children involved and that was certainly achieved through the hard work of all your splendid club volunteers." Also enthusiastic about the conditions and hospitality were Ashley Norton and David Stitson from Horndon on the Hill CC, one of the two finalists involved. From David Stitson: "Thank you for all you have done to make this such a great day for our juniors. It could not have been done any better". From Ashley Norton: "Thank you to Belhus CC for a day to remember".
Among the Belhus volunteers were: Jim Robertson and Richard Waters (Barbeque), Tracey Topp and Carol Edwards (Tea Bar), Richard Day and Paul Hall (Ground Preparation), Brian Edwards (Car Parking, Signage and Bar Management), Peter Clark (Spectator Seating Provision), Mark Winter (Catering Provision Supplier) Michael and Julia Squires (Team Refreshments), and Cliff Cansdale (Team Liaison and Scoreboard Operator). As for the match itself, Horndon on the Hill CC defeated Wickford CC by 15 runs in a very enjoyable match. Belhus CC, whose Chairman Brian Edwards presented the trophy to the victorious captain and keepsakes to all the players who took part, would like to thank the South Essex Board for accepting the club's offer to host the final and to thank John Wade for all his tireless efforts on behalf of the young cricketers of the South Board.
Healthy Living Partnership
Belhus Cricket Club have teamed up with Thurrock Primary Care NHS Trust - to provide cricket practice, games and training drills at the Trust's Healthy Living Family Fun Day which will be held at Grays Beach Park on Saturday 13th August from 10am. Belhus spokesman Cliff Cansdale said: "We are pleased to be working in partnership with our Primary Care NHS Trust for the very first time. We have been aware for some time that we play a role in providing healthy living for the community and we are delighted to be able to support this very worthwhile inititiative. It is very important that, as the local community grows, there is enough parks, open spaces and sports pitches to enjoy a healthier lifestyle". The event at Grays Beach Park will be testimony to that.

Belhus Reported to League
Belhus Cricket Club has been reported to the committee of the Lord's International Essex Cricket League...for GOOD conduct. The report has been made by Bert Browne of Hawks CC following a recent first eleven league match at the Highams Park based club. It is understood that the report was triggered by full acceptance of a bizarre situation which occurred when the bails at the striker's end were dislodged shortly after a ball had been delivered, which, accoring to Mr. Browne, was a potentially controversial incident. Later, Hawks secured victory in the last over with just three balls remaining when Belhus batsman Chris Didd "walked" after thinly edging the ball through to the wicketkeeper.
Top Award for Belhus CC
Belhus Cricket Club has been awarded with Essex Active Sports "Club SX" gold accreditation mark for sports clubs, in recognition for the way in which the club is managed. The thriving cricket club based at the village green at North Stifford joins Thurrock Swimming Club as only two clubs within Thurrock who have successfully demonstrated that they meet all the necessary criteria for "Club SX" accreditation, particularly in the area of child welfare and safety.
Mark Aldous, Club and Coach Development Officer for Essex Active Sport, who is based within Chelmsford Borough Council's Leisure Services department, said: "I would like to offer my congratulations to Belhus Cricket Club on receiving Club SX Gold. The work that they carry out for cricket in the area deserves recognition and reward and that is one of the reasons for the introduction of a Club Accreditation scheme in the County. It is vitally important that parents know that the clubs they are sending their children to meet a set criteria and we are delighted that Belhus CC has joined the growing list of clubs to do so. It is my firm belief that clubs who reach this level of accreditation will have a definite advantage in the future as funding partners will increasingly insist on accreditation before working with clubs."
The club has also been praised by Nicole Napier, Sports Development Officer of Thurrock Council. Nicole said: "When choosing clubs to work with in the future, the sports development team will look for clubs that have achieved accreditation as this shows a safe and well structured club. This award demonstrates the strength of the club which is a clear advantage when applying for external funding and the sports development team are extremely pleased to see sports clubs taking a pro-active role in providing quality sport to youngsters in Thurrock".
Already, Belhus Cricket Club is working on its first joint project with the sports development team at Thurrock by providing volunteer coaching staff for the Thurrock U11 Girls cricket team at the Essex Youth Games which will take place in Southend on Saturday 18th June.
Belhus Cricket Club now have their sights set on attaining a further accreditation, that of "ClubMark" which has been set by the sports governing body - The England and Wales Cricket Board in partnership with Sport England - and the club expects to meet this further criteria very shortly.
