SUSSEX YOUTH TOUR - ENGLAND INTERNATIONAL ADDED TO ITINERARY (final update - 8th Aug 2008)

August 08, 2008

Following the success of this year's Sussex youth tour, Roedean School have confirmed that they will be able to host our party again for 2008. The dates of our tour are therefore confirmed as being from Monday 11th August until Friday 15th August 2008, both days inclusive.

It has been agreed that our 2008 tour will be extended to include the U17 age group. This means that all of the 2007 players will be invited back and closes the age gap between the youth and senior tours. As last year, the youth tour is open to all juniors who have played 40 overs per side cricket or equivalent. Last year, we had three U11 players on the tour party, being Harry Levy, Ryan Wells and Donovan Wright, who enjoyed the tour just as much as anyone else!

We have kept in touch with the teams we played in 2007. Each of our hosts received a thank you card, showing a print of Lord's by Jack Russell. While our tour itinerary will be shaped by our host club's Sussex Junior Cricket Festival fixtures, Henfield have already agreed to host us in 2008 as they do not take part in the Festival.

A pre-tour visit to Roedean School was undertaken on Thursday 8th May, to confirm all arrangements. This year our party will have exclusive use of Keswick House, a self-contained residential block, for those who went last year it is the building close to the indoor swimming pool.

Roedean notified us that, due to increased costs, mainly on fuel and food, it is necessary in pass on these costs and reluctantly advised us that the costs has increased by £5 per person per night. Therefore the overall accommodation cost per person this year is £120. As last year, junior players accompanied by a parent and not requiring transport will have all their cricket match expenses paid for them. So there will be no additional costs (except Belhus apparel). If there are a number of members on the tour who require transport, then the cost of coach or minibus hire, including fuel will be divided up between those who need it, along with a fair proportion of the costs for cricket teas, balls and presentations. The final, overall price for those unaccompanied/requiring transport has been decided as being £170, that is £120 payable to Roedean and £50 payable to Belhus Cricket Club.

We now have a cricket fixture confirmed for all five days of the tour (see below). Additionally, the senior fixture at Leeds Castle has been arranged by our Fixture Secretary, Fred Taylor, as part of the club's senior midweek fixture list.

PRE-TOUR BARBECUE
The club would like to say a big THANK YOU to all those who stepped to help out at the successful youth tour fund-raising barbecues which were held on Friday 11th July and Saturday 12th July. Totals of £70.10 and £37.00 were raised, despite the unfavourable weather.

FINAL TOUR PARTY IS 45-STRONG
Our final tour party is as follows: 16 players - George Brooks, Danny Chandler, Ricki Ellis, Tony Ellis, Michael Fogg, Gavin Jefferies, Owen Jefferies, Danny Joyce, Dale Kenyon, Harry Levy, Danny Norris, Jason Peters, Ryan Prendergast, Chris Sharp, Ryan Wells and Billy Winter. In addition, we currently have 21 adults, 5 non-playing juniors and 3 infants. A tour party of 45 in total.

The club has decided on the appointments of team captains (one per match) and the captains have attended a meeting to finalise the team selections. A copy of the team selections will be available in the clubhouse from 9th August onwards and have also been emailed to players will a known email address.

TOUR PARTY POLO SHIRTS
Jackie and Ron have kindly agreed to source polo shirts for the tour party, which will be embroidered with the Belhus CC badge and tour lettering. The cost per shirt will be about ten pounds each. We ask that all members of the tour party advise Jackie or Ron of your shirt size (ie XXL, XL, L, M, S) as soon as possible.

TOUR HANDBOOK
A tour handbook will be issued shortly before the tour, which will include the itinerary and emergency contact details. The publication will be available for collection in the clubhouse over the weekend of 9-10 August, with any players not selected for the weekend having their copy posted. With many thanks to Barry Ruck for arranging production of the tour handbook.

We would like to record our sincere thanks to our hosts - without you we would have no tour! We are deeply indebted to you. Thank you once again.

ACCOMMODATION
Accommodation is confirmed as being at Keswick House, Roedean School, Roedean Lane, Brighton, East Sussex BN2 5RQ. Unfortunately, Roedean will not be able to provide accommodation for a small number of our party at the weekend before or after the tour. This is because the expected small numbers involved would not make it viable to cover employing staff during the extra few days.

OTHER ACTIVITIES
Cliff Cansdale would be keen to learn of activities that could be added to the tour itinerary. Suggestions so far include a curry night at a local restaurant and a table tennis competition. Meanwhile Ron Norris has decided to put up a trophy for the Tennis competition and has also kindly offered to manage the tour barbecue evening once again. There is also the option of re-visiting the tenpin bowling centre at Brighton Marina, which was enjoyed by all in 2007.

On the first day of our tour (Monday 11th August), there is a floodlit cricket match taking place at Sussex County Cricket Club, Eaton Road, Hove, 2.30pm start. It is a one-day international, 50 overs per side, between England U19 and New Zealand U19. Admission is free.

For those interested in football, Brighton and Hove Albion will be playing their first round home Carling Cup match against Barnet at the Withdean Stadium, during the week of the tour. The exact date is Tuesday 12th August, 7.45pm kick-off.

A personal note to all tour party members from Cliff Cansdale:
It has been a real pleasure putting together the plans for the club's eleventh youth tour. I would like to thank everyone who has helped with the tour, and, at the risk of forgetting someone in which case profound apologies are given, I would specifically like to mention the parent who donated the food for the fund-raisng barbecues; To Carol and friends for the fund-raising raffle; To Ian Wright who, for the second time this season, navigated to Sussex for the pre-tour meeting at Roedean, on a day when it was purely co-incidental that Sussex CCC were playing at home; To Ian again and the small band of club colleagues who manned the fund raising barbecues, to Brian Edwards for his contacts and help in securing use of a minibus, with special thanks too to Bill Taylor, then must not forget June Villette and Barry Ruck for the production of the handbook and Denis Reed for its content and layout. To Jim Robertson, the club treasurer, for making sure the bills get paid on time and last, but by no means least, Ron and Jackie Norris for organising the tour polo shirts.

Recent Mailshot - Documentation Guide
During the period 25th-31st May, a mailshot was issued to all known prospective tour party members. Here is some guidance and explanatory notes for some of the documentation enclosed:

General Safety Notes and Risk Assessment
The General Safety Notes should be read thoroughly and should also be read in conjunction with the Risk Assessment document. These two documents set out our safety standards and all tour party members are expected to comply with the recommendations specified. Safety is of absolute paramount importance to us all.

Roedean Booking Form
One booking form will suffice. There are two signature boxes at the bottom of the form; the first one should be left blank (as this is for Roedean signature); it is the bottom signature box that should be signed by an a parent or legal guardian aged 18 or over. Keep one copy for yourself for your own records. A reminder that one copy of the form should be sent with your cheque made payable to "Roedean School Enterprises Ltd".

Incidentally, should you need to cancel a booking, Roedean will accept cancellations up to two weeks prior to the start of the tour, thereafter no refunds will be permissable. For your security, contracts for accommodation and services at Roedean School are direct between the named individuals on each booking form and Roedean School, Belhus CC are not party to any contract for accommodation or other services at Roedean.

Player Profile Template Form
This form has been reproduced from the latest publication of the England and Wales Cricket Board's "Safe Hands" child welfare policy. It might have been easier if it was called "Emergency Details" form for that is what exactly it is.
On the third page there is reference to a section 6 (which does not exist) and we believe it should read "Section 5".
This is being queried with the authors of the form.

This form is essentially for the small number of juniors that tour with us who are permitted to be unaccompanied, but for good practice we recommend a form is submitted for every junior player on the tour party.

EABC: Avery cages Essex to draw but Boys Clubs finish undefeated

July 19, 2008

Colchester Royal Grammar School U12 160-6 dec
Essex Association of Boys Clubs U12 124-5 (match drawn)

Like the U14s playing on the adjacent ground, the Essex U12s also fielded first as the grammar school reached 35-2 after the first ten overs. A partnership of 72 ensued between M. Clark and Brenson, which took the score to 107 after 22 overs. Clark went on to make 46, which left the visitors a target of 161 in 32 overs. Unfortunately, wickets fell too frequently for any stability to be established as the Boys Clubs had to be content with a draw. Pick of the home bowling was Avery with 1-9 from four overs as Luke Williams top scored for Essex with 31 not out. Events Co-ordinator for the Essex Association of Boys Clubs, Keith Cramner said: "Without doubt the under twelves were very happy with the result as this means they have been unbeaten throughout the season. Well done to all our boys who have represented us this year and we look forward to seeing all the players at our schools fixtures again next year".

EABC: Levy steps up to hit 28 then takes 1-19 at Colchester Royal Grammar

July 19, 2008

Colchester Royal Grammar School U14 266-4 dec
Essex Association of Boys Clubs U14 144-4 (match drawn).

The visiting Boys Clubs' representative team won the toss at Colchester and invited their Colchester hosts to take first knock on a warm but breezy day. The decision looked a good one as opening batsman King was caught by Joshi at cover point. Gardner soon followed for 17 with the score on 45. Unfazed by the early loss, Rich and West then put the Essex bowling to the sword as they added 215 for the third wicket in 23 overs taking the score to 260. West finished with a magnificent 127 to his name and Rich ending with a fine 76. The pick of the Boys Clubs' bowling being Bottoms 1-16 and Harry Levy (Belhus CC) 1-19. The declaration came after 31 overs, giving Essex a maximum of 29 overs to reach their target.

The two visiting openers, Tom Leach and Levy did well to put on 27 without loss in the seven overs bowled by Colchester before tea. Runs flowed after tea as these two put on 66 for the first wicket in 15 overs until Levy, drafted in at short notice from the U12 squad, was first to be dismissed for 28, a superb peformance, given that he was batting outside his normal age group. Hall came in and he and Leach put on 33 in quick time before Hall fell for 10 runs. Tom Wood's (Belhus CC) knock of 17 kept the scoreboard ticking over, putting on 30 runs with Leach, who reached his first 50 for the EABC, ending 58 not out as EABC reached a respectable 144-4 after 29 overs. The pick of the Colchester Royal Grammar School bowling was Dow with 2-19 in 6 overs. Essex Boys Clubs' cricket manager Dave Shelton said: "This was an honourable draw on a flat pitch. Before going into this game we had had mixed fortunes losing three games out of five and they boys wanted to finish their representative cricket in some style. Yes, they certainly achieved that".

Belhus Sat 4th XI elected to Readers South Thames Cricket League for 2007

December 05, 2006

Belhus Cricket Club were unanimously elected as members of the Readers South Thames Cricket League at the competition's annual general meeting held at Sidcup CC on 4th December (2006). The club will be entering its Saturday fourth eleven into the second of the two-division league, which caters for teams of third, fourth and fifth eleven standard. After the meeting, there were handshakes all-round as many of the club delegates welcomed us on board. Representing Belhus CC at the meeting were Fred Taylor (Hon. Fixture Secretary) and Cliff Cansdale (Saturday 4th XI Captain). Both were questioned at some length by the meeting, prior to the vote being taken. Questions fielded included: "Why do you want to come to Kent to play - what is wrong with Essex?", "Will you be a genuine fourth eleven and how many juniors will you play?", and "Will your team have sufficient transport?". A pledge was given the entered team would be a genuine fourth eleven with a number of juniors present. An explanation was also given that we had no league options available to us in Essex as the Mid-Essex League had recently introduced a rule where new applicants needed to have their ground within ten miles of the County Ground at Chelmsford. We advised that it was important for us to play in a league as this would ensure a regular fixture list where our young players could develop by playing alongside more senior players.

Belhus play each of their opponents twice, home and away. Our opponents will include clubs such as Belvedere, Bexley, Bromley, Bromley Common, Dulwich and Old Colfeians.

2007 Belhus CC Junior Coaching at Ilford Cricket School UPDATED 22/11/06

November 22, 2006

To provide the very best opportunities for our junior members and by popular demand, we have hired two cricket nets with professional coaches at the Ilford Cricket School, Sussex Close off Beehive Lane, Ilford, IG4 5DR for twelve weeks commencing Thursday 4th January 2007 for one hour each week between 7-8pm. The sessions will run weekly up to and including Thursday 22nd March 2007.

This course of net coaching is suited to all junior members in preparation for the 2007 season. By booking two nets, we can cater for a wider spread of ages, with the younger players in one net and U14s and above in the other. Places can be booked on a first come, first served basis, by detatching, completing and returning the application form, which is available from Cliff Cansdale (07817 066935) together with a remittance to cover the hire costs - £72 for full twelve weeks - to Cliff Cansdale at 64 Sunrise Avenue, Chelmsford CM1 4JP, by 22nd December 2006. (We can accept two cheques, each one for £36, one of which will not be presented until the start of the seventh week.)

The venue has an excellent track record of producing many first class cricketers. It is currently managed by Joe Hussain, father of former England captain Nasser Hussain and has a changing facility, viewing area together with an equipment and tuck shop. There may be further opportunities for our players to have one-to-one coaching and use of a bowling machine by separate arrangement with the school.

To ensure that our juniors progress and develop, it is recommended that our young players attend every week wherever possible. For safety and to replicate, as near as possible, normal batting conditions, players should wear whites and trainers and bring along their full equipment to include abdominal guard, thigh pad, gloves and helmet. These items are mandatory.

One of our coaches from our Autumn 2006 sessions, THEEBAN TARVARASA, played regularly for the Essex second eleven in 2006 as well as Ilford CC. He was the County's development squad player of the year in 2006, having previously played for the Essex U17 team. Aged 19, he a right-handed batsman and bowls off-breaks; is a level two ECB Coach and was born in Sri Lanka on 17th January 1987. Theeban has now left us for the very best of reasons - he has been selected for the Essex Academy Squad and has recently travelled to India with Graham Gooch to attend a spin bowling academy. We wish to congratulate Theban on his selection and wish him every success for the future.

Our other named coach is "GUNAR". He is a much respected coach at the Ilford Cricket School, very popular with juniors and parents alike. He holds and ECB level one coaching certificate but has extensive experience both as a player and coach. He is a member of Woodford Wells CC.

In the event that the course is over-subscribed, we will endeavour to hire additional time at the school. For further information, contact Cliff Cansdale on 07817 066935 or by email at ccansdale@hotmail.com.

Directions to Ilford Cricket School: Take A13 towards London and take the A406 (North Circular Road exit northbound. Continue past the Barking and Ilford exits, then take the A12 exit for Redbridge roundabout. Take A12 east towards Southend. At cross roads controlled by traffic lights, turn left into Beehive Lane, then first left into Radnor Crescent. Belhus CC Granted Planning Permission for Permanent Outdoor Nets

October 30, 2006

Belhus Cricket Club is pleased to announce that it has received planning permission from Thurrock Council to erect permanent outdoor cricket nets at the North Stifford ground. Our plans were submitted earlier this year by Jim Robertson, who said: "'It's great news for the club and for this area of the borough. It is still early days in terms of the facility actually being put in place, but it is a big stepping stone towards this long term dream becoming a reality. These nets, if and when installed, should be the best in the area by far". The next stage is for funding to be secured. Jim continued: "We priced the job some eighteen months ago, and we were looking at the net structure and surfaces being in the region of £15,000 with the security fencing being another £6,000". The club is already earmarking certain external funding towards the project and additional funding partners will now be required to help make the much needed community facility into a reality. Belhus youth chairman Cliff Cansdale admitted: "With so few facilities available to hire locally, we are asking parents to take their children to places like Ilford and Chelmsford for coaching, or even to school halls outside the local area. To have such a facility in our own backyard will benefit not only the club as a whole, but equip individual players with the skills they need to compete adequately with well-coached players from outside the area. I am certain the benefits, especially in terms of the development of the large number of local children interested in cricket, will be enormous".

More playing opportunities for Belhus juniors revealed

October 06, 2006

Belhus Cricket Club, has, for the first time, elected a Saturday fourth eleven captain and is organising a pre-arranged list of fixtures as the club aims to provide even more regular cricket for its members during the 2007 season. A programme of approximately 12 fixtures is being arranged by Fixture Secretary Fred Taylor during a period of the season when it is felt that availability will be at its highest. The team will be captained by Cliff Cansdale with Paul Whitlock as vice-captain. Cliff Cansdale said: "This presents a good opportunity for a greater number of junior members to learn more about the game in a fun environment without the pressure of league cricket. I am sure it will be thoroughly enjoyable for adults too and I am sure we have a good fixture list with similar strength teams".

Belhus U13s to play Caterham School

June 15, 2006

On Sunday 18th June 2006, Belhus U13s will play at home to Caterham School, 10am start at North Stifford. Caterham High is a mixed comprehensive school, with sports college status, catering for approximately 1300 students of 11-18 years of age and is built on one site. It serves part of the Clayhall and Woodford Bridge areas of the London Borough of Redbridge. Clayhall itself is in the northern part of the Borough, not far from its boundary with the County of Essex, and is adjacent to some open country; both Hainault and Epping Forests are nearby. Most of the school’s catchment area consists of houses built during the 1930 -1950 period. There have also been several very recent developments in the area. Youth Team Management Resolved

May 03, 2006

Following two highly successful and well-attended parents evenings for the U11 and U13 youth teams, it has been resolved that the U13 team will be managed by Richard Day (01708 859597) and Mark Winter. The U11 team will be managed by Gavin Jefferies (01375 371045). Gavin is currently a member of the Belhus U15 squad and the club are delighted that Gavin has volunteered to manage the team. Gavin, who is studying for a GCSE in physical education and a sports leadership course, becomes the youngest ever team manager at Belhus CC and will be well supported by senior club members during the season. In addition, several parents have come forward to offer supporting roles: Janet Jefferies has offered to assist with the production of the well-renowned bacon sandwich supply at the clubhouse for home U11 fixtures, Jeremy Mason has offered to be kit manager for the team initially, before looking to take a coaching course to assist the juniors with their cricket skills. With other assistance provided by Carol & Brian Edwards and Barry Ruck, the youth section appears to be in good shape to cope with the ever-growing number of children who are looking to enjoy their Cricket during the Summer.

Youth 'Clubnight' Begins

April 23, 2006

The clubhouse facilities and ground will be available to all members for practice. As the membership of the club is rapidly expanding, we have decided to operate two "clubnights" each week from May until July, starting at 6.30pm.
Junior clubnight will be held each Friday evening from 5th May 2006 until July. Clubnight is free to all junior members; however it is worth pointing out that the club canot guarantee that any specific coaching or training resource will be available at any given session. Parents are not encouraged to use the Belhus CC clubnight as a free creche; for safety reasons we recommend that a parent or guardian remains on the premises - or better still offers help with organising the games or sessions - throughout the hour or so that a clubnight session lasts. A warm welcome is extended to all parents in the Belhus CC clubhouse, to provide a refreshing start to the weekend!

Junior members of the Belhus U15 squad should NOT attend junior clubnight on Friday evenings, unless attending to assist the younger players. U15 squad members should attend the senior clubnight on Wednesday evenings (commencing 3rd May) unless requested otherwise by Mike Squires (Team Manager) - the most likely reason being a fixture having to be played.

U13 Squad extended to Two Teams

April 23, 2006

Belhus Cricket Club are looking to field two U13 teams this season. Chairman of the club's youth section, Cliff Cansdale explains: "We currently have 24 juniors listed for the U13 squad this season. From past experience, we always attract a few more players during the season. This means we are certainly looking to operate two U13 teams for 2006". Plans are well advanced for this; Richard Day and Mark Winter will manage the Belhus U13 A squad, while Cliff Cansdale will manage a Belhus U13 B squad, which may include members from the U11 team when the youngest of our squads do not have a fixture. Contacts for U13 team management are: Richard Day 01708 859597 and Cliff Cansdale 07817 066935.

Essex Selections at Cambridgeshire

April 23, 2006

Eight Belhus junior members have been selected to represent the Essex Association of Boys Clubs at two fixtures on the picturesque grounds of Kimbolton School in Cambridgeshire this week. On Monday 24th April, the school hosts an U12 game, while the following day sees another trip to the same venue, when the U14 fixture is played. Both games start at 2pm. Players represented for Belhus are U12: Connor Day, Sunil Raj Sangha and Bill Winter. U14 players chosen by the EABC are: Jack Day, Ricki Ellis, Danny Norris, Ben Palmer and Jacob Ward.

Kimbolton School is a co-educational day/boarding school of approximately 850 pupils aged between 4-18, is over 400 yers old and its grounds are surrounded by Kimbolton Castle. The Castle, originally a medieval castle, underwent many changes before the Great Rebuilding by Vanbrugh, Hawksmoor and Adam, as the country house of the Dukes of Manchester. The Castle's most famous resident was Katherine of Aragon, who died in residence in 1536, and small sections of the Tudor house have survived. Although the Castle now belongs to the School, visitors can still see the impressive range of State Rooms, with an outstanding set of murals by Pellegrini. The Castle is set in extensive, wooded grounds, with pleasant walks.

Belhus Achieve ClubMark accreditation

March 26, 2006

ecbclubmark-96.gifclubmark-2col-small-92.jpg

Following months of preparation and training, we learned on 6th June 2005 that we have been awarded with the England and Wales Cricket Board's "ClubMark" accreditation, which shows the club to be a "safe and effective, child-friendly club". David Leighton, National Manager for Cricket Clubs from the England and Wales Cricket Board said: "I congratulate Belhus Cricket Club on being one of a selected number of cricket clubs across England and Wales to achieve ClubMark accreditation. The principles behind achieving accreditation are important, and ensure that your club are now in a position to continue developing and delivering high quality community cricket to the current and future members of your club and specifically to young cricketers. The hard work your club has put in has been recognised by the England and Wales Cricket Board, your County Cricket Board, Sport England, and by partners locally. However, the hard work does not stop here. It is now the responsibility of all club members to uphold and continue the best practice you have put in place as part of the ClubMark process, and continue to thrive as a community cricket club. On behalf of the England and Wales Cricket Board, I would like to congratulate and thank you all once more for your commitment and dedication to community club cricket".

EABC Trials Update

March 20, 2006

The Essex Association of Boys Clubs have been in contact to congratulate us on the support they received from Belhus members, seniors and juniors alike, when their annual cricket trials were staged at Barking Abbey Sports Centre on Saturday (18th March 2006). In an email to the club, events co-ordinator Keith Cramner said: "Thanks for the fantastic support we had from your club at the trial last Saturday, especially to Mike (Squires) for his help and all the parents for bringing the young people along on the day. In the U12s, we now have the right number for a squad. In the U14s, we had nearly 30 juniors from year 8 and 9 at the trial. Most players, we expect, will get at least one game with a few being placed on a reserve list".

The EABC will be writing to all the players who represented the EABC in 2005 and who still qualify for their 2006 season age groups. Belhus CC will be looking to nominate further players for the forthcoming trials. There had been early indications, given the success of the 2005 U14 squad, that the group would remain together for an U15 squad this year. However, the EABC has decided to remain with the U12 and U14 age groups. The EABC will be continuing their attractive programme of fixtures, including visits to Eton College and Harrow School, the mini-tour of Bristol and Bath is currently being organised by the hard-working EABC staff. Mini-Matchplay Fun

September 26, 2005

A squad of junior members from Belhus Cricket Club joined 31 other clubs from across Essex and East London in the seventeenth annual mini-matchplay kwik cricket event at the Ford Essex County Ground at Chelmsford on Sunday morning. Belhus were drawn in group two with Chelmsford CC, Little Waltham CC and Stanford le Hope CC in this six-a-side tournament, with the event taking place on the main ground right in front of the main pavilion. All of the players received a medal from the Essex County Cricket Board and there was an opportunity to learn about the coaching courses that are available at the Essex Indoor Cricket Centre to ensure that the junior cricketers develop their skills during the Winter to be properly prepared for the 2006 season. Speaking at the conclusion of the festival, Alan Lilley, himself a former member of a successful Essex team several years ago and now Cricket Operations Manager of the Essex Cricket Board said: "It has been a fantastic year of cricket, with the Ashes victory and a successful season here at Essex too. Some of our players started their cricket careers by playing in Matchplay and there is a real opportunity for you all to progress, and, one day, you may get the chance to represent your Country or to play on this ground with Essex CCC".

The Belhus squad who took part in the event were: Billy Winter (Capt), Duncan Brown, Libby Cansdale, William Carter, George Gainsborough, Rebecca Holyoak, Owen Jefferies and Sunil Raj Sangha. Earlier, while waiting for the registration process of the players to be completed at the indoor cricket centre, a quiz was set in which the Belhus squad, between them, were able to name all eighteen counties taking part in both divisions of the County Championship, all six test match venues used in England and also managed to name all ten ways in which a batsman could be dismissed without any prompting! Well done to the squad for responding very well to some real challenging questions. As for the cricket itself, Belhus lost their opening match to Chelmsford, then defeated Stanford le Hope. The final game with Little Waltham was a real thriller: Little Waltham chased 85 to win with just one ball to spare.

Visit to Sussex CCC

August 01, 2005

Junior members of Belhus Cricket Club accompanied by some parents and senior club members, visited Arundel Castle Cricket Foundation on Monday (1st August) for coaching under the direction of former Sussex CCC captain and England selector John Barclay. The trip was organised by the Club and sponsored by the Ford Motor Company. The Belhus juniors enjoyed over two hours coaching at the excellent indoor centre. Lunch was held on the seafront at Hove and, to round off the day, the party went to watch the exciting floodlit league match between Sussex and Somerset at the County Ground, televised live by Sky Sports, which ended in a thrilling finale as Sussex won by just 11 runs late into the evening. Many of the Belhus juniors returned home much the wiser for the new-found cricket skills and with a host of autographs from players, commentators - and even the third umpire (David Shepherd). John Barclay, at Arundel, said: "We were delighted to have a party of juniors from Belhus Cricket Club here and we must do this again soon. Belhus Cricket Club will be very welcome". Meanwhile, the final quote should come from one of our own junior members which was overheard by chance: "This has been the best day trip I have ever had".

Junior members attending were: Duncan Brown, Michael Fogg, Gavin Jeffries, Owen Jeffries, Ashley Kirk, Danny Norris, Sunil Raj Sangha, Chris Sharp, Bradley Sheridan, George and Joe Smith. Senior playing members: Martin Brown, Cliff and Michael Cansdale, Chris Didd.

Clubnight Concludes

July 24, 2005

The popular Belhus cricket clubnight, held weekly at the club's North Stifford headquarters, will finish for the 2005 season on Thursday 28th July. These have been a great success and very well attended by juniors, most of them new to the game. This bodes well for the long-term future of the club". For its post-clubnight period for the second half of the 2005 playing season, despite being in the midst of the holiday season, Belhus are hoping to ensure that activity for its junior members continues. A team comprising of available players from the U13 and U11 squads will be selected for the fixtures on 31st July and 7th August, while U15 squad members are asked to ensure that their availability is marked on the availability chart of the clubhouse, or notified to Roy Heffernan on 07944 988594 or Jim Robertson on 01708 859377 or 07889 900263.

Belhus acting youth chair Cliff Cansdale said: "I am delighted with this feedback especially as we had our largest ever contingent for this annual event. Our junior members who toured can be proud of themselves. I would just like to thank Keith and all the hard-working staff at the Essex Boys Clubs for giving such a tremendous opportunity for our aspiring cricketers".

Belhus Girls meet England Team Player

June 03, 2005

Three female junior members of Belhus Cricket Club attended a two-day coaching clinic at Saffron Walden CC during last week's half-term holiday. Libby Cansdale, Lucy Paisley and Amy Squires received expert tuition from Charlotte Edwards (England Women's vice-captain) along with Helen and Dave Letch from the Essex Cricket Board. The Belhus junior members then lined up with the Essex and Huntingdonshire U13 girls squads for a photocall and presentation of certificates. Girls cricket practice continues each Thursday evening at the club's North Stifford ground on Thursday evenings at 6.30pm and at the Chafford Community Day at the Chafford Campus on Saturday 11th June from 10am until 12 noon. For further information on girls and womens cricket at Belhus CC, please contact Lisa Cansdale on 01375 396096.

'ClubNight' for Juniors

May 11, 2005

The North Stifford ground will be available to all junior members on Thursday evenings from 6.30pm each week when our popular "ClubNight" returns on Thursday 12th May. Ground facilities will be available to members for training purposes, subject of course to prevailing weather conditions. In order to develop our training facilities still further, a £1 contribution will be expected from all participating members each week. Junior members must not be left on the ground unaccompanied by a parent/guardian.

The club will encourage its qualified member coaches and senior members to assist with the development of its younger and less experienced members. However, parents and guardians of our junior members should note that our coaches are no different from anyone else in the community, ie, they are volunteers who have jobs and family commitments, therefore the club cannot guarantee the availability of any specific coaching resource at "ClubNight". The club welcomes the support of parents and guardians to take a pro-active role in the development of its young members and to encourage their juniors to enrol at the various coaching schemes organised by Essex County Cricket Club and the South Essex District Cricket Board.

PUBLIC SCHOOL BOOST FOR BELHUS YOUNGSTERS

April 29, 2005

Four junior members of Belhus Cricket Club have been selected to represent the Essex Association of Boys Clubs at cricket this month. On Saturday 7th May, Michael Fogg, Gavin Jeffries and Bradley Sheridan have been selected for the match at Harrow School on Saturday 7th May, while a week later, Gavin Jeffries and Richard Vigors are expected to make the trip to Berkshire for the Association's annual fixture at Eton College. Gavin and Richard have then been invited to play against Uppingham School in Rutland, on Tuesday 17th May.

RAIN DELAYS PLAY

April 28, 2005

Five junior members of Belhus Cricket Club were left disappointed on Tuesday when their scheduled representative match for the Essex Association of Boys Clubs at Chigwell School was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain. Richard Bonnington of the EABC said: "There had been a heavy downpour and the ground was saturated. Both teams wanted to play but we had to be realistic that play was just not possible. We hope to be able to re-arrange the game for later in the season". The next EABC representative match is on Saturday (7th May) when the U14 squad travel to Harrow School.

SEASON STARTS THIS WEEKEND

April 27, 2005

The winners will be playing either Cranham or Orsett. Belhus U11s get under way the following Sunday morning (8th May) when they visit Benfleet.

BELHUS ARE INDOOR YOUTH CHAMPIONS

April 23, 2005

Belhus Cricket Club retained their U16 indoor six-a-side championship crown at Grays School with two disciplined performances in both the semi-final and final matches to close the Winter's indoor activity for another year. The top four teams qualified for the final evening, creating two semi-finals and a final. Stanford le Hope were paired with Cranham A and Belhus were to play Basildon and Pitsea.

Semi-Final Report
BELHUS U16 93 all out (11.5 overs)
BASILDON AND PITSEA U16 73-4 (12 overs)

Belhus skipper Mason Wren won the toss, elected to bat first, then promptly racked up an undefeated score of 30 as his third six took him beyond the compulsory retirement mark. After Clark Wren, Michael Cansdale, Stephen Samms, Frankie Paisley and Terry Squires had been dismissed for 11, 8, 3, 8 and 1 respectively, Wren was back at the crease for the final over. However, last over bowler Jack Buckfield claimed his wicket and that of Frankie Paisley, to finish with 2-4 from his one over. Wren was only able to add one further run to his original tally. Supporting Buckfield with the ball for Basildon and Pitsea were Eliza Smith 2-27 and Dean Bedford 1-11.

After the break, three tight overs, one each from Mason Wren, Terry Squires and Frankie Paisley ensured that Basildon did not reach a double figure score until the start of the fourth over. However, Jack Buckfield, scoring 17, and Stephen Ayres, with an undefeated 15, attempted to boost their team's progress, but in the end the Mopsies Park-based club finished 20-runs short of the Belhus total. Frankie Paisley emerged the hero in the Belhus bowling stakes with a wicket maiden from one over, while Stephen Samms took 1-15.

Final Report
Belhus 106-4 (12 overs)
Cranham A 85 all out (11.1 overs)

The script was familiar; Belhus won the toss, elected to bat and Mason Wren reached the retirement mark of 25 with two sixes. Clark Wren hit a fine 20 and Stephen Samms supported well with 15, the quick demise of Michael Cansdale for three, Frankie Paisley for nought and Terry Squires for a single brought the hard-hitting Belhus skipper to the crease. He did not disappoint, reaching an undefeated 38 at the close of the innings to put Belhus in a strong position. For Cranham, who had disposed of Stanford le Hope in the first semi-final, David Skillett, Harry Andrews and James Cox took one wicket each.

Despite a good target, Cranham knew that they had twice defeated Belhus earlier in the tournament so a Belhus victory was not a certainty. Indeed, Cranham began to savage the Belhus attck as they had done in the two previous meetings. Chris Squance was brilliantly caught off the wall by a full-length one-handed diving catch by Stephen Samms for 18, while fellow opener Harry Andrews made 10. Nathan Palmer reached 17, but three run outs from some excellent Belhus fielding thwarted the Cranham reply. The game was finally up when Samms uprooted the leg stump of James Cox for 9, to give Belhus U16s the indoor championship for the second successive year. Terry Squires, Michael Cansdale and Stephen Samms claimed one wicket each. After the game, presentations to both teams were made by Ron Skillett of the South Essex District Cricket Board.

SIX JUNIOR MEMBERS MAKE THE EABC SQUAD

April 19, 2005

Six junior members of Belhus Cricket Club have been selected for the Essex Association of Boys' Clubs first representative cricket match of the new season. Connor and Jack Day, Frankie Paisley, Sunil Raj Sangha and Billy Winter were due to play at Chigwell School (U12's) on Tuesday (26th April).

BELHUS JUNIORS IN KWIK CRICKET FUN

April 04, 2005

Belhus Cricket Club entered three junior teams in the recent Essex Association of Boys Clubs indoor kwik cricket tournament at the Eversley Leisure Centre, Pitsea. For the first time, the North Stifford-based club fielded an all-girls team.

The teams were split into two groups, with Belhus U11s and Belhus girls in group one with St Josephs youth club, while Belhus U13s were in group two along with Lazer, Trekkers and Lifstan youth clubs.

In Group A, Belhus U11s were in sparkling form. In their first game against St. Joseph's, Bily Winter struck an unbeaten 51, while Connor Day and Billy Mills scored 16 and 14 respectively. Then, to round up the St. Joseph's innings, George Smith and Connor Day took two wickets each. In their second match, they took on Belhus girls, when George Smith hit three sixes in an unbeaten 25, Billy Winter hit four sixes in an undefeated 30, Connor Day struck four fours in reaching 25 not out, while Sunil Raj Sangha and Billy Mills scored 15 runs apiece. The return matches were similar; against St Josephs, Owen Jeffries scored 24 while Connor Day hit 28 not out, Billy Winter 26 not out and Billy Mills supported well with 10 runs. Later, George Smith and Owen Jeffries took two wickets each. In their first match against Belhus girls, the under eleven squad reached their target of 39 without loss through George Smith, 13 not out and Billy Winter 21 not out. Belhus Girls went on to lose to St. Josephs by 44 runs, though Louise Placeson and Amy Squires took two wickets each with Placeson scoring 11 runs. In their next meeting, Ewan Day, a young reserve for the Belhus 11 squad, guested for the girls team and made an impressive 15 runs, though St Josephs won again, this time by 65 runs.

As group B was slightly larger, teams only played each other once. Lazer Youth emerged as group winners with a 100% record, with Belhus U13s taking the runners-up spot. After defeating Lifstan youth club by 25 runs, they faced a tough challenge from Lazer. Belhus openers Rikki Ellis, 15 runs, and Jacob Ward, who scored 26 not out, were impressive as Ellis struck two fours and Ward struck two sixes and three fours. However, the resulting target of 78 was overcome by Lazer, depsite two wickets for Frankie Paisley and one for Rikki Ellis.

The top two teams from each group went through to the semi-final stage. This paired Belhus U11s and U13s together for a competitive but fair contest. The Belhus U13s batted first and reached 69-3 through Joe Smith, 18 runs, and Jack Day, 11 runs. However, any thoughts of a massive target being set by the older lads were well and truly thwarted by the impressive pace of Connor Day, 2-6, while Billy Winter and Owen Jeffries took one wicket each. A shock result was on the cards when Billy Winter was scoring runs freely. In the final over he hit the winning runs to finish with 42 not out, despite the best efforts of Danny Norris and Rikki Ellis, who took a wicket each. However, the Belhus U11s finally succumbed in the final to Lazer Youth by three wickets.

The tournament provided the Belhus club to field an all-female team for the first time against outside opponents, with the girls team being led by Lisa Cansdale, herself a level one ECB qualified coach. Lisa said: "The girls did very well, they improved during the afternoon and they all thoroughly enjoyed the event".

SUSSEX YOUTH TOUR - COMPLETE ITINERARY (Updated 24.07.06)

July 24, 2000

Belhus Cricket Club are pleased to announce that its youth section will be moving to the South Coast for its the ninth tour of Sussex, commencing on Monday 14th August until Friday 18th August 2006. This is now a confirmed itinerary though minor chages may be made as the tour progresses depending on local conditions. During our tour, Essex are playing Sussex at Hove in a day-night floodlit match on 14th August with the ground entrance fee being included in the cost; while we are able to use the Ford Community Minibus to help with transport during the week; there is also the attraction of the Eastbourne Air Show taking place on Thursday and Friday 17th-18th August - ideal if we are able to secure a fixture close by.

If you are not away on holiday during this week - do not miss this tour! They have been great fun and thoroughly enjoyable for the players - we are certain this tour will be no exception!

We are proposing that the cost of the tour is FREE OF CHARGE to players who will be touring with their parents and making their own private arrangements for accommodation - which is the recommended option. All cricket-related costs will be bourne by the club for players in this category. Otherwise, the cost for any unaccompanied player on the tour party will be £90 per person (as agreed at the parents meeting held on 28th June) and a breakdown of the tour party costs are shown at the end of this document. Please note that the non-playing adults ie youth leaders are also paying for their accommodation, so everyone is paying a fair price!

We have decided to stay at one of the two previously mentioned youth hostels in the Brighton area. For safety reasons, this information is not published on this club website. Further details and confirmation letters, including copies of itineraries, fixtures and location maps for parents will be mailed nearer the start of the tour when all tour arrangements have been confirmed.

The club expresses its thanks to all parents who have ensured that payments have been submitted on time to ensure the smooth planning and organisation of the tour.

The tour playing party is open to all Belhus CC junior members and it is envisaged that our tour party will consist of groups of players from each of our U11, U13 and U15 squads plus a couple of players from school year eleven.
We will be alerting our host clubs to the composition of our tour party so that they will be able to match our playing strength. All players, regardless of age, gender or ability (or anything else for that matter) will receive a fair number of selections in the fixtures which may be arranged.

Parents who are not on the tour party are very welcome to visit for one or more matches. It would be helpful if you let Cliff Cansdale know when you intend to travel so that team selections, wherever practical, can be balanced to suit.

It has been identified that space in the minibus is severely short. We would ask that parents not touring make every effort to meet us at our final match on Friday evening to bring your children - and baggage - home. Otherwise it is likely to be a very uncomfortable journey home, especially if it is hot. It is likely that our players will want to arive home promptly and in comfort after what will, undoubtedly, be a thoroughly enjoyable but tiring week.

This page of the website will be updated regularly to show the latest news and itinerary as it develops during the run-up to the tour.
